ow that weve done our cheery Happy New Year greetings, its time to get more serious.
Im a boomer. In my lifetime, I cant remember a new year beginning with such dire warnings and grim outlook.
This morning, the UKs The Telegraph reports that Americans bought record numbers of guns last month amid an apparent surge in popularity for weapons as Christmas presents.
Another UK paper, Daily Mail, is grimmer still. Dominic Sandbrook writes that a loss of faith in politicians and democracy could make 2012 the most frightening year in living memory. Sandbrook goes as far as to compare our time with the Great Depression:
For the most chilling parallel, though, we should look back exactly 80 years, to the cold wintry days when 1931 gave way to 1932
. It was in 1931 that the Great Depression really took hold in Europe, bringing governments to their knees and plunging tens of millions of people out of work. Then as now, the crisis had taken years to gather momentum. After the Wall Street Crash in 1929 just as after the banking crisis of 2008 some observers even thought that the worst was over. But in the summer of 1931, a wave of banking panics swept across central Europe.

I'll be eating that day and warm sheltered in a couple.
Life will build and grow
>>To hell with that. Our Gov is EVIL, weak and flawed. Talk all the fancy talk, quote all the founders. Our founders warned us of this day. Well, its here. This is now, and now is what we are fighting. I wont be regulated my freedom. F the gov. Im going to live my life.<<
Amen, brother. I fight in every way I can. Sometimes small (my census was filled out NOYFB); sometimes big (TEA Party marches, in-your-face with politicians).
>>If they (AKA government) are going to take away my freedom and liberty, Im going to fight until the end.
Come and get me.<<
They may TRY to take away our freedoms, but it will be a costly fight. And they better pack a lunch.
PB is being rationed at BJ’s (Costco clone)due to poor harvest.
Easy water distiller - a big spaghetti pot with an angel food cake pan (one that has a hole in the middle) that fits snugly into bigger pot.
Put water in the big pot, start to boil make a dome top out of aluminum foil seal well. Water will make steam, steam will hit foil dome and slowly drip down into the angel food cake pan. Pure H2O.
When the store shelves are bare there will still be plenty of silver, gold and diamonds. But what good is it when there is nothing for sale?
You can't eat it, defend your home with it, or shoot a squirel with it.
How many Kugerrands will the last can of beans be worth to a starving man?
That takes a lot of energy a Berkey Filter takes none.
My plan as well. I don’t know anyone who wants to be shot with a 22. Not the most powerful but definitely part of the plan.
300 gallons will last a single person about 3 months at most. depending on weather and activity levels.
Boiling enough water takes a lot of time, work, and fire.
Since I’ve been down with a bug, I’d add various meds to the list; dayquil/nyquil-types for symptomatic relief, and to help you sleep, etc.
Stuff for the runs...besides first-aid kits, there’s a few more conditions I can’t think of right now...
Thanks for the ping, Kartographer, and Happy New Year.
Solar “ovens/stills” will pasteurize water. Heck, your car will work if you live in a sunny and warmer climate. Boiling for ten minutes or warming to 140 for ~6-8 hours will acomplish the same thing. I have a few solar shower bags stashed for hygene and pateurizing. Given rain, a fresh water stream and sunlight you can do a lot.
Read Mel Tappan’s books for a response to your statement.

Talk her into the freeze-dried food. Start small, 3 months supply for your family, then build upon it. Tell her that once you have it, you’ll always have it (for 25/30 years, anyway) and if in 25 years you were proved to be a paranoid nut, you’ll be happy to donate it to whichever soup kitchen she wants to.
Note that even if you have a 2 year supply, after 2 years your food runs out. So you need to start thinking about how to produce your own food, which is a far more difficult phase of ‘bugging out’ to plan for.
Solar is not that dependable in many areas of the country and boiling is an energy ‘hog’ and as you said you need to start with relatively ‘clean’ water to begin with.
It will kill the organisms, but it wont take out all the toxins likely to be present is surface water.
I love my old Remington Nylon 66. A lot lighter than the Marlin. I just picked up another brick of ammo yesterday.
A solar still will take out toxins and even desalinate water. Look for a drip catchment cone design system or a coil type drip tube. This won’t produce hundreds of gallons but it will provide some safe clean drinking water given enough daylight. Design plans are available and depending on the “lid” types can be used for cooking and/or generating some pure water. Preparation of a reasonable system could be done with a little research and only some basic supplies.
**”I use Waltons 8 grain mix to make flour with my grain mill. It makes AWESOME homemade bread at about $.50/loaf.”**
Recipe please :) I love to cook and am pretty accompished in that area. Baking however is my Achiles heal. I keep trying homemade bread and keep failing.
