Newt Gingrich: What Kind of Catholic Is He? Melinda Henneberger
December 23
The Newt Gingrich who talks about finding ways around the U.S. Supreme Court ban on school prayer and says public schools should be required to teach the Creator is not immediately recognizable to those who knew the former House speaker when he was not much of a church-goer. These days, Gingrich is running an overtly faith-based presidential campaign with echoes of televangelist Pat Robertsons run in 1988.
But on a quieter tour of Catholic America that began more than a year ago, the GOP candidate has been sounding religious themes for some time. Since 2010, Gingrich and his third wife, Callista, have been showing their documentary film about Pope John Paul II, Nine Days that Changed the World, in Catholic churches and schools across the country.
And as an announcement for a September screening at Trinity Heights in Sioux City, Iowa, made clear, politics, faith and commerce come together in these outings: Newt and Callista will be available after the film for DVD signing and a signing of the book, Rediscovering God in America.
Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has praised the influence of his wife, Callista Gingrich, and the choir she performs with when discussing his conversion to Catholicism.
Gingrichs critics look askance at this busy intersection of personal and public, new faith and old, tribal politics, Roman practice and American commerce. They question the timing and sincerity of the former speakers conversion to Catholicism two years ago, especially in light of the Gingrichs unspoken but unmistakable Im one of you message in the venues where he shows his film to fellow Catholics, who are a key swing voting bloc.
Thats perhaps especially the case because the candidate, who was born a Lutheran and previously a....

I don’t call those who attend Novus Ordo masses phony. The only one I’ve termed phony is Newt.
It’s Vatican II that created the Novus Ordo which to me and millions of others amounted to the creation of a new religion inside the Catholic Church.
....and with you!
I'm not certain as to what you are attempting to say; however, Newt is a phony to me due to many things, but endorsing the cap and trade and the global warming nonsense was quite enough.
I disagree with you completely. Perhaps you have some inside information of which I am not aware, Commander.
Joining your religion is like joining the Masonic Lodge...Can you point to a place in scripture where anyone, anywhere was told to study the church for a year before they could become a Christian??? Of course you can't...That's ridiculous...
Act 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
And how do people get saved???
The truth is not based on the emotions of one moment at an altar call.
It most certainly is...
Act 2:21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
And in most cases, it is not at an altar call...It's in one's bedroom, or car, a shower, at a party, or even sometimes at church...It can and does happen anywhere...
And yes, it is super duper emotional...But most of the emotion comes aftarward...
When an altar call takes place, most folks don't walk down an isle...They sit in their seats and ask Jesus to save them, right then and there...It's between the individual and God...And it's very personal...
Jesus nor any of the disciples ever told anyone they had to wait for anything...That's outrageous...
Becoming a Christian is instant and immediate...
Becoming a Christian isn't social entertainment, or an initiation into an organization...
When a person calls on Jesus, it is now...Right Now...
It appears as tho you don't have the foggiest idea what it is to become a child of God...It sure ain't studying your religious history...
>> “Newtie would be more comfortable as a Mormon.....before they did away with polygamy.” <<

They havent doe away with Gnosticism yet, so he should fit in real well there.

They havent done away with Gnosticism yet, so he should fit in real well there.
>> “Because he found religion and joined the true Church.” <<
.
That’s OK, he’ll join the REAL true church when he meets Harold Camping...
>> “Ive never got how anyone could be Baptist in the first place and preach against the church that Christ started?” <<
.
Both the Baptists, and the Catholics are working against the cuurch that is in Christ.

“By their works ye shall know them”
LOL! The apostles followed Jesus around for three years. Still laughing.
They learned as they followed.
Who said that Baptism in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit is social entertainment?
I would appreciate it if you would stop posting falsehoods about the Catholic Church and the Baptism that in your words brings a perosn to be “born again” and free of sin.
I don’t care for RINOs and neither should you.
For all I know, he’s a better Catholic than I.
Thank you, Salvation. :)
Newtie is a born again novus ordo, phony Catholic. New members like these continue to dilute the congregations as they are truly agnostics and believe in nothing.
Newt believed that his former marriages were negated by the very fact that he became a Catholic while the very reverse is true. Church believes that joining the church in order to negate prior marriages is a SIN!
Sorry, Newtie, no White Hut and no absolution for a serial marriager.
So, you and Steelfish gonna come clean and tell us who y'all support?
Are you Romney-botts or Paul-inistas?
Come on, man up and quit hiding behind phony excuses.
Oh, btw, I'm a fairly good (none are perfect) practicing Catholic!
...who are dutifully posting ANY and ALL "Negative" articles/stories, etc. about Newt...this one takes the cake!
Allow me to remind all Christians of John 8:7
"And as they continued to ask him, He stood up and said to them:....
LET HIM WHO IS WITHOUT SINE AMONG YOU BE THE FIRST TO THROW A STONE AT HER....."
