The December 31 issue of National Review the last one before the Iowa caucuses will feature a cover of Newt Gingrich appearing as Marvin the Martian, which some of have suggested could be one of the most memorable covers of the bi-weekly magazine.
The cover story is the latest in a series of eyebrow-raising moves by the magazine, often considered to be the gold standard for periodicals in conservative politics. On Wednesday afternoon, its editorial page came out vehemently against Gingrich, warning his nomination would place the White House out of reach for the GOP.
Mark Steyn, one of the magazines columnists and author of the year-end cover story, explained on Hugh Hewitts radio show Thursday why Newt is a bad choice.

I just heard Rush Limbaugh say that the fear of Newt stems from a fear of conservatism and a fear of the focus on God. They fear Newt can win as a conservative and mentioning God.
Oh, Establishment, you always know what’s best!!!!!!
I don’t understand Steyn’s personal animus towards Newt, when there are other candidates so much more worthy of it. Sometimes it is just a personality thing, or a subconscious rivalry.
Newt reminds me of the statement that the road to Hell is paved with good intentions in that he beleives government is the answer.
Newt may be conservative, but isn’t he part of the Establishment?
IMHO, he’s about as “insider” as you can get.
Steyn is right about this.
Newt becoming the darling of FR is mind-boggling.
Rush just plyed a parody on Ron Paul talking about Iran and his belief it is ok they have a nuke. It went something like this: “Vote for Ron Paul. Not the zany Newt. Brought to you by the Republican Establishment for moderates.”
I get some of steyn’s fears. I feel similarly. But while newt is a risk, I don’t think he will be “zany” as president. Is he the best choice? No. I’d rather a more sober president. But he may be our best shot at getting Obama out of the white house. And he’s dirty but e isn’t liberal.
It’s not an ideal situation but I’m ready to vote for newt.
IMHO, hes about as insider as you can get.
And the rest are “outsiders” and are going to stay that way.
Steyn can take his Romney-loving butt back to Canada for all I care. What a disappointment some of these so-called conservatives have been.
“Benign Totalitarian”, besides being an oxymoron, is an apt description of every major-party office holder these days. :)
Newt’s one of the only leaders in recent memory who has lead successful, concerted efforts to diminish the size and scope of government and Steyn claims Newt is a totalitarian. Yeah, okay.
If he is, where is the Establishment support?
I would say he WAS an insider, but has not been for some time.
Another Romney clone speaks up. But the base has tuned them out, as well as their quest to destroy America the slow way.
They are now permanently insignificant. The Status Quo establishment GOP is history.
Newt forced himself upon the establishment and they hated his success.
His force of personality has again thrust him into the spotlight to the chagrin of the establishment.
This time everyone can see for himself Newt's incandescent intellect.
The media will not marginalize him again.
It's the media that has been marginalized by the Tea Party.
Exactly!...The establishment Republicans do not want him...then I do!
I challenge anyone who thinks like this, to go to http://www.newt.org/solutions
and tell me what you find there that you disagree with.
