Why Newt's lobbying matters
Washington Examiner ^ | 121511 | Tim Carney

Posted on 12/15/2011 7:13:53 PM PST by Fred

Whenever I write that Newt was, in fact, a lobbyist, I get lots of responses reading "who cares!?" or something to the same effect.

The reason it matters, though, is not because being a lobbyist is inherently bad. The problem is twofold:

1) Newt says he didn't lobby. He did. That means Newt is not telling the truth. A candidate serially telling untruths is a reason to not like that candidate.

2) Newt didn't simply lobby for businesses. He lobbied for businesses that were trying to profit at the expense of everyone else by increasing the size of government. This was what he did at Freddie Mac, this was what he did expanding Medicare to subsidize his pharmaceutical clients, and this was what he did helping ethanol companies get subsidies.

This article is lies, all lies. Gingrich worked as a contract consultant; that does not equal lobbyist.

Gingrich had two contracts with Freddie Mac to act as a consultant. Those two contracts were over a period of six years for the sum of about $263,000 per years. Freddie Mac did not renew the contract as they didn’t like what he told them.

I have worked as a contracter. So what is your complaint?

If you don’t like Newt Gingrich, fine. But there is no need for reporters to lie about the man’s record.

I hear he worked an hour a month.

We all know the real reason.

It was political cover. “Geez, you rascally Republicans should not increase oversight, see we even got a Republican on the payroll to show we aren’t bad guys”

lobby

Definitions (2)
1. Group that attempts to influence a legislation or government spending plans to achieve an outcome more favorable to its agenda or objectives.

Newt was lobbying although he wasn’t registered as one. He’s just a crony capitalist whore buying the opportunity for one group to use government to get other people’s money. Real capitalists provide wanted goods or services to get money.

Not from me. I say prove it. And you can’t. A consultant, believe it or not, is not always hired to lobby.

Georgia thinks Newt was a state lobbyist.

You offer as much evidence as Tim Carney. You should get a job at the Washington Examiner.

Total BS. The fool writing the story does not know the difference between a consultant and a lobbyist. What a crock this story is.

I agree, but the Freddie Mac moment tonight was Newt’s weakest. He can defend it better than he did. Normally he doesn’t leave “money on the table” in the debates - he usually maximizes it - but not on that.

But stupid Bachmann keeps thinking she’ll get Newts supporters by slamming him. Michelle darlin, we just don’t think you are smart enough, and this is not helpful. If we thought you were smart enough, we’d have already come to your column.

I don’t think he did lobbying work, i.e. using his political connections to benefit his clients.

And I don’t think it matters either.

It’s a free country (still...)

I have a problem with Newt taking money from a corrupt government entity such as Freddie Mac and I don't care what capacity or role he claimed he was working as. Everyone has known what a dirty corrupt waste of tax payers money they were since Clinton was in office. No honest man would have had anything to do with them.

Freddie Mac did not renew the contract as they didn’t like what he told them.

There is absolutely no evidence that this is true. Every official of Freddie Mac that has commented has said that it is not true.

Let's try to stick to the truth.

I have a problem with it too. Then again, I am grateful for the CWA election in 94 and the budget and welfare reform and tax issues he forced on Clinton. So, I’ll get over it. But it is a stinky part of his history.

Why does it seem that every anti Newt post is from a Perry supporter?
