Gov. Perry challenges Pelosi to a debate (Pelosi to respond at today's morning press conference)

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has challenged the women conservatives love to hate — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi — to a public debate next week.

In a letter obtained by The Hill, Perry requested that the pair meet for a debate during Perry’s visit to Washington next week to compare the plan he rolled out this week to “Uproot and Overhaul Washington” with the current system.

“I think it would be a tremendous service to the American public to see a public airing of those differences,” he wrote. “Let the people decide.”

Perry’s challenge comes just days after his roll out of his plan to reform Washington. A central piece of his plan is a part-time Congress with half the salary and office budgets.

“After increasing the debt by $4 trillion in less than three years no one can truly believe that Americans are satisfied with business as usual, and that a permanent political class in Washington can get us out of the mess you and your colleagues have created,” Perry wrote......

......Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill told The Daily Caller that the minority leader will address the challenge in her weekly press conference Thursday morning.

Great idea on Perry's part. Everyone knows Pelosi and Reid did a lot of dirty work for Obama, and it is a good idea to put Obama’s henchmen front and center. It also provides an opportunity to watch Pelosi cover her own @ss and throw Obama under the bus. If it happens, I hope Perry does well.

The problem with this is that it not only IS a stunt, it LOOKS like a stunt, and election-year stunts are signs of desperation. Why would Pelosi agree to this? She will come out and mock Perry, and now he will look foolish. If she said yes, what has been accomplished? If he beats her in a debate, it`s not going to help him with primary voters who have seen his performances in debates with the people he`s actually running against, and what if he LOSES to Pelosi--certainly in the realm of possibility considering his debating skills?

I think Perry has terrible advisors. In fact, CW, you seem to be his smartest supporter--maybe you should offer your advice to him?

Smart!

Draw attention to yourself and force the MSM’s hand.

Thinking outside the box.

I like it. That’s the kind of stuff that will keep Perry alive. Let’s see if the MSM ignores this.

Maybe Governor Perry should prepare for debating fellow Republican presidential candidates instead of debating the dimwitted House Minority Leader.

When will they realize that jumping on CW’s threads with little posts that I guess they think are clever doesn’t do anything but annoy people.

It does not make Cain look better, people. In fact, your tactics reflect badly on Cain.

Here’s a couple of sharply contrasting images...

Newt sitting beside SanFranNan chatting up global warming.

Perry challenging SFN to debate the issue of Washington DC out of control and cutting it in half.

Perry challenges Pelosi to a debate -----Texas Songwriter points out," This is a scene from 'Dumb and Dumber.' ”

Heh---nice take.

Perry actually thinking Pelosi would debate him (dumb).

Perry staging a stunt to raise his dwindling chances (dumber).

Looks like Gov Perry has decided to apply his own version of asymmetrical warfare to his campaign. I'll give him an “A” for creativity.

Personally, I think Gov Perry has gotten a “bad rap” and a lot of bad breaks and, yes, made a few highly visible “unforced errors.” While I am a Cain supporter, I don't think Perry is anywhere near as bad a candidate as some here have proclaimed. He is VERY strong on States Rights and 2nd Amendment ...both very important to me.

I live in VA and I think many of us non-Texans are too quick to condemn Perry's stand on allowing “illegals” to attend Texas colleges/universities at in-state rates. While I am not “wild” about that situation; I have to wonder just what Perry, as a leader, could be expected to do; given that the Federal government continues to not enforce our borders and to place obstacles in the paths of states that attempt to do so. It appears the vast majority of Texans supported the in-state tuition rates; based on their legislator's votes. I think a whole lot of this controversial situation is more understandable when it is put in the perspective of the long history that Texans have w/their friends and neighbors who are of Mexican descent.

I'm probably going to get flamed; however, I sure would like to see all the sniping going on between Perry and Cain supporter come to an end. It's not helpful.

Using the Dennis Miller test (Dennis jumped off the Cain train because he didn’t think Cain is electable. I agree),

Anyway, using the electibility test.

Romney: probably electable but the enthusiasm among conservatives would be about like it was for McCain, maybe worse.

Gingrich: probably electable but all his prior mistakes that made him a dirty word on Free Republic would come back to haunt him.

Bachmann: would get the staunch conservative vote, but would turn a lot of middle of the roaders off with her odd husband and other things.

Santorem: Maybe, but people just don’t seem to warm to the guy. Why are two guys running who couldn’t even win a senate seat?

Huntsman: Might get some democrat votes.

Cain: His campaign has peaked and his support is showing cracks. His knowledge of issues is poor and his choice of a campaign manager doesn’t bode well for who he would choose in his administration. He might squeak through but I’d have to drag my aching carcass to the polls. He would not pick up any black vote from Obama. It’s iffy on his wife’s vote.

Perry: Extremely electible. There are no skeletons and the more you know him, you better you like him. He takes on Obama and is 95% right on everything that matters to conservatives.

Just my unbiased opinion.

There are 3 reasons why this is a bad idea:

1.Nancy is not running for President

2.Perry's debating skills are terrible.

3.

Dear Leader Pelosi,

After reading about House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer’s outburst over my “Overhauling Washington” plan, I wonder if his obstructionism reflects your own opposition and that of the Democratic Caucus to urgent reforms the American people so vehemently demand.

After increasing the debt by $4 trillion in less than three years, no one can believe that Americans are satisfied with business as usual, and that a permanent political class in Washington can get us out of the mess you and your colleagues have created.

A part-time Congress with half the pay would still make $38,000 a year more than the average American family. Do you truly oppose lawmakers spending more time in their districts? Is it so important for the Washington power brokers to build their fiefdoms of influence, including providing bailouts to Wall Street while businesses on Main Street are being boarded up every day?

Here is the fundamental question: do you believe Washington is broken? Before answering that question, consider these facts:

1) the Washington Metro area is now the most affluent metropolitan area in the country because lobbyists, contractors, elected officials and bureaucrats have been insulated from the economic ruin prevalent in the private sector;

2) Congressional office budgets have doubled since 2000 while employers all across America are laying off workers;

3) Our nation’s total debt is nearing the size of our nation’s economy, increasing our dependence on competitors like China;

4) The number of Americans out of work has increased by more than two million since January 2009, despite the massive stimulus package Democratic leaders promised would revive the economy, and;

5) on top of the job-killing spending policies of the previous Congress, employers are faced with a staggering $1.1 trillion in costs related to federal regulatory compliance.

Do you truly believe the answer to massive debt, over-regulation and bloated big-government policies is to continue to protect the status quo, which enriches and empowers Washington insiders at the expense of the American People?

My plan would overhaul Washington, eliminating certain agencies and reducing the size and scope of others. It will force Congress to make the tough decisions to balance the budget or require a further reduction in their pay. It would end lifetime appointments to future appointees to the federal bench. I don’t want to tinker around the edges when the American People demand a complete overhaul of Washington.

Let me conclude with an invitation: I am in Washington Monday and would love to engage you in a public debate about my Overhaul Washington plan versus the congressional status quo. I think it would be a tremendous service to the American public to see a public airing of these differences. Let the people decide. If Monday doesn’t work, perhaps we could find a time in Iowa over the course of the next month to discuss these issues in front of the people of America’s heartland.

Should you choose not to respond or engage in such a healthy discussion, I will take it to mean you will continue your obstructionist ways in the face of much needed Washington reform.

Sincerely,

Rick Perry
Governor of Texas
