...With Cain facing a series of harassment allegations, a lack of campaign organization in the early voting states and questions about his readiness for the job, political observers expect another candidate to emerge as Romneys rival.
Gingrich and Perry are the most obvious applicants for that role. Rep. Ron Pauls (Texas) unpopularity with mainstream Republicans makes him unlikely to win, and Gingrich and Perry triple or quadruple everyone else in polling.
...So whos got the upper hand in the race to become Romneys rival? Lets break it down:
Money
Perry is the easy winner here........
Debates
Gingrich is the easy winner here.....
Issues....
The take-away is that both candidates fell from their early heights, in part because their supporters felt they werent ideologically pure enough, so its difficult to know which of the two theyd prefer...in a new Washington Post/ABC poll....Gingrich nearly doubled Perrys performance on the question Who best reflects the core values of the Republican Party? and he edged out Perry on Who is the closest to you on the issues?
Advantage: Gingrich.
Intangibles..........
But if Gingrich takes two of the first three categories, he loses rather badly on the fourth. Perry has been married to his childhood sweetheart for almost 30 years. Gingrich is on his third marriage and has admitted to infidelity in his previous two.
And, yes, Perry is known for being fairly brash, but Gingrich has a famously self-destructive streak and a discipline problem thats imperiled him throughout his career. Gingrich also last held elective office over a decade ago, while Perry has been an executive of one of the most successful states over the past decade.....
Perry trounces Gingrich on whom Republicans think is most electable, doubling the former Speakers support.
Overall
Gingrich takes two categories and Perry takes two, which means....

Yep, he has the record. I’ll say it again, Newt is really fun to listen to, but this country is in trouble right now, we need a chief executive who has what it takes to steer it clear of the rocks.
I can vote for either of them, but I think Newt is the one I could support the easiest.
“...With Cain facing a series of harassment allegations, a lack of campaign organization in the early voting states and questions about his readiness for the job, political observers expect another candidate to emerge as Romneys rival.”
And I guess we are supposed to follow this script? Is that the plan?
I like Perry and I think he would probably make the best president of anyone running. I also believe he’s the least electable. I don’t see how he goes up against Obama in debates and comes off as anything other than a laughing stock.
We nominate Perry, we’re going down.
That’s what I honestly believe.
I have to go with Newt on this one.
I like Newt’s plan to dog Obama at every campaign stop and demand Lincoln-Douglas debates. I think that alone would win the election.
And for the record, I am not attacking Perry. I know that the acrimony level here in FR for and against various candidates has reached fire-storm levels and I am not trying to add to that.
But I’m not going to stifle my opinion just because some ardent supporter might take personal offense. I’m not trying to offend anyone.
Again. I like Perry. I think he’s been given a lousy shake by conservatives on his positions regarding the border and I also think he would make a good, maybe even a great, president.
But I honestly think that he would lose in a landslide to Obama.
If the question is “Perry or Gingrich”, I have to go with Gingrich, who will do fine as president and who will clean Obama’s f*ing clock in the general election.
As long as Perry can stay ahead of Huntsman, he still has life. Right now, he’s making that run for the cellar, in Iowa.
The biggest challenge for Newt is the personal baggage. The “media`s” attacks on Cain amounted to a light snack compared to the feast they have in store for Newt.
They`re holding fast until they are given the “go” at the right time.. just as they did vs. Cain.
By the way, good morning - another day, another dollar.
I see it completely oposite of you.
This country is in deep doo doo. Gingrich is the only one who actually can navigate legislation through congress. Perry really not very intelligent or very motivated. I don’t think he’d be very aggressive with congress.
We’ll have to watch Newt, for sure. He certainly has character flaws but gone are the days we can trust any president anyway. Watch him, we will.
“we are supposed to follow this script? Is that the plan?”
Bingo!
Problem is, Cain is ahead in every poll everywhere. This lead will increase after that great presser defending himself against the media BS. Romney or Perry would have stammered their way all the way through a presser like that.
Bingo!
This script was written before Cain kicked the Media's ass in the news conference yesterday. They could not comprehend that he might actually come out of these attacks unscathed.
Well maybe not unscathed, but very strong.
I know no one wants to hear this, but here’s how it should be. We elect a candidate fair and square in the primaries, then we rally around him to get him elected. Each candidate is flawed, but the objective is to get this incompetent man child out of office and then to reverse the damage he’s done.
Anyone listening to Newt in five minutes will get fired up with the enthusiasm to see our country rise up to greatness again. Maybe Romney is the most electable conservative... who knows.
Bottom line, whoever is OUR candidate I’m supporting whole heartedly...
Exactly. The Left is picking our candidates once again, just like in 2008. Will we be fooled again? Or fight?
Newt is a talker and Perry's a doer. Plain as day. Perry will stay with the grind of work while Newt flits off on his next "big" idea.
You are a psychiatrist?
Calling your opponents psychopaths?
How special.
The dollar, adjusted for inflation, after taxes, fees and penalties might be worth 20 cents, but good morning to you too!! :)
