Today, the Talibans are in a war with an enemy never defeated in battle; the Scandinavians (well, Germany defeated Denmark rather easily in WWII and in the end, the French actually learned how to control the Vikings by the force of heavy cavalry).
History acknowledges many bold soldiers; the Romans, the Moors, the troops of Stalin and the US Marines.
But to most people finding themselves standing on a battle ground, none of these opponents are as fearful as a fully grown son of Thule high on strange mushrooms swinging his sword and having his mind set on running you and your home over in a fashion only a tank could compete with.
Today, Scandinavia and especially Sweden produces some of the most advanced weapons the World ever has seen.
But if I was a Taliban, I'd fear the uncompromising spirit and rage of the Northmen themselves even more..
Luckily enough for me, I am one of them blue eyed berserks myself and perhaps, I'll one day decide to have a beer or two where you live.
Just kidding. We Scandinavians of today are indeed true friends of America. There are other nations we, the tenth largest economy on Earth measured by Nominal GDP (if Finland is included), also would like to see more of close cooperation with. Germany is one such nation. Britain too. Greece and Iran of course are not.
Cheers and see you in a hockey rink sometime soon:)!

The way I understand it is that every Chief had a group of loyal bodyguards called the rus. There is speculation some Chiefs sailed in their shallow draft ships up what is now known as the Volga and some eventually settled in the area. Somehow the name Rus became Russia??
Poltava.
Before, Sweden was one of the Great Powers.
Afterwards, not so much.
True. Swords were extremely expensive and limited mostly to nobles and leaders. Take too much iron/steel and especially too much highly skilled labor to make one.
Any village blacksmith could make a perfectly good spear in short order. Or an axe, which was the other major Viking weapon.

Brian Boru drove the Vikings out of Ireland at the Battle of Contarf, 1014.

Plentiful booze, diminishing sunlight and national inferiority complex rear their ugly heads once again this year.
The Normans were a handful of Norse and a whole lotta’ Breton.
The DNA in Dublin shows otherwise ~ not that Brian Boru didn’t win a fight or two, but all the Vikings didn’t leave. Else Ireland would have had no cities and ports.
That’s how I heard it too. The name that sticks in my mind is Rurvik, who I believe is counted as the first Tsar.
That's easy for you to say
I’ll stand with you, my Viking brother. Please add me to the Norse list. My family came over with William in 1066 and we’re in the Doomsday Book”!
Not the kind of Viking kitten I had in mind!

Russians don’t do well in war.
This is what happens to silly Russians who threaten the strongest nation on Earth.
If you challenge Sweden, you’ll get taught a hard lesson.
We outweigh any of you in terms of muscle, performance and size.

You are partly correct. The cities of Dublin, Waterford, Wexford, Limerick and Cork were original Viking settlements. The first recorded raid by Vikings in Ireland occured in 795 and for the next 200+ years they occupied parts of Ireland and did in some cases assimilate with the Irish. It is actually a fascinating period in Ireland. After 200 years of conflict, Brian Boru united the Irish for a final battle that virtually ended the Viking age in Ireland in the year of 1014.
There’s even more to be said.
If you really have a death wish, attack Sweden.
You think your nation could stand up to the toughest soldiers on Earth?
