Cain backs off criticism of Perry ranch, denies playing 'race card'
The Hill - Blog Briefing Room ^ | October 3, 2011 | Justin Sink

Herman Cain pushed back Monday against criticism that he had unfairly called opponent Rick Perry "insensitive" when asked about a rock carrying a racial epithet at a ranch leased by the Texas governor.

“All I said was the mere fact that that word was there was ‘insensitive.’” Cain said outside Trump Tower in Manhattan, according to the National Review. “That’s not playing the race card. I am not attacking Gov. Perry. Some people in the media want to attack him. I’m done with that issue!”

[snip]

Cain seemed eager to put the issue behind himself Monday, asking reporters to instead ask about "what's important to the American people" rather than "beat this distraction to death about a word that appeared on a rock."

“I really don’t care about that word,” Cain said. “They painted over it. End of story! I accept Gov. Perry’s response on that.”

It was also insensitive to call us “heartless”.

Seems the problem here is that something like this rock wasn’t taken care of before Perry entered the race.

Seems Perry has a lot of goofy baggage.

It isn’t Cain’s fault that Perry has this stuff out there.

Cain was asked about it and he answered. Could he have done better? Yes, but he didn’t bring the subject up.

Maybe they will all catch on, that when dealing with the media, to just answer for what concerns themselves.

Cain should have just said:

“I wouldn’t know anything about it. Why don’t you ask him”?

There was nothing to address.

This was not an issue ever. This was a smear story created by the Washington Post in order to create an issue where none exists. The story just now appeared in print and Wallace on FNC just now asked Cain about it.

Your statement that Perry should have addressed it along time ago is impossible to take seriously.

Cain’s inexperience is showing, and he is getting involved in lover’s spats he should avoid. Take the fight to Obama, and act like no one else is in the race.

Man, the Perrybots really are this stupid. You really think showing how many potential undiscovered landmines there are in Perry's record HELPS him?

Wow, project much? Exactly how is a rock, that someone tagged, on land that Perry does not own, and has been painted over to remove the word 30 + years ago, a "landmine" in Perry's record?

Perry did nothing insensitive, he or his dad painted over the word on the rock, then eventually turned the rock over so nothing would even show through the paint.

And you want to push that he showed insensitivity?

You are sick.

He needs to do his homework he lied about Perry being soft on the border...he needs to issue a statement on that too. IF he can't do that he remains off my list of as a candidate. It's called amateur hour so far for Cain.

"He should have said this yesterday."

Perry should have had the rock removed the second he saw it.

Just more evidence of unsound judgement from Perry.

You think this is going to make the rounds of the thousands of MSM and blog outlets and have that headline to rebut all the BS.. "Perry's family summer home is named......?"

Before Perry says anything about the “n*gger-head” incident, he needs to FIRST:

1. Apologize to the conservative base for calling them racists by saying people who disagree with him on illegals “don’t like the sound of their last name.”

2. Admit that the conservative base is NOT heartless for disagreeing with him on illegals, not merely that it was a poor choice of words on his part.

3. RETURN all campaign donations from financial interests that are benefiting from the use of cheap Mexican labor, such as agribusiness and construction interests. He needs to carefully investigate his donor base to ensure that Mexican drug cartels are not providing financial support to his campaign through cut-out sources to support open borders.

4. WORK toward getting laws like Alabama’s recent law on illegals on the books in Texas.

5. SUPPORT the fence. Fences are a force multipler.

6. OPPOSE benefits for illegals. Illegals should be deported, not subsidized.

It was not Perry’s rock to move. It was not Perry’s father’s rock to move. They did not have ownership, so they did what they could, paint and turn over. At that, they could be in trouble for defacing someone’s elses property.

Well, I would ask you this:

Suppose you are a professional politician...

And someone offers to lease you some land...

And the land is called "Niggerhead"...

Shouldn't some kinda ALARM BELL have gone off in Perry's mind? As in, "No thanks, I'll look elsewhere."

Just sayin'

Anybody who falls for this made-up hit piece on Perry is the one who’s “stupid”.

Sorry, an above post quotes his exact words on the programs yesterday, and he most definitely accused Perry of doing the opposite of what Perry actually did, and he most certainly called Perry racially insensitive.

Today he claims he never said that about Perry.

Read his exact words that sklar posted which show that when he says today that he only meant the word on the rock was insensitive, not Perry, he is not telling the truth.

If you dare to read them, because it’s quite clear you have no interest whatsoever in the fact that he is claiming not to have said words against Perry that he clearly said and millions were watching.

I like Herman. I am a nobody’s bot. I will wait until the time we have to choose.

I have said my bottom line issue that will cause me to not vote for a person is “illegal immigration”.

I have to know the person puts Americans and their interests first.

No more compassionate BS.

Why the HELL is it okay for Cain to misstep/mispeak, but it ain’t okay for Perry to do it? Or Bachman? Or whoever?

We ALL know what they meant. Why are we parsing our own guys’ statements to find something to bludgeon ‘em with?

Here we go again with circular firing squad.

It’s analogous to something my dad used to say about Christians:

“We’re the group that’s best at shooting our own wounded.”

I have the latest "hard copy" edition of "The American Spectator." It has an article titled "Betting on Rick Perry" -- "He's a winner in a Republican year, with no need in the world for liberal approval" -- By John H. Fund.

How timely.
