Social conservatism goes hand in hand with fiscal responsibility. Once the two diverge a real mess ensues.
While I care about both, of course, if I had a choice between a social conservative, and a fiscal conservative, I would vote for the social conservative.
However, most social conservatives are also fiscal conservatives, so we social conservatives have it easy.
The GOP would do much better in hispanic and black areas if they emphasized social issues. Instead they often pick some pro-gay white guy with $$$ and wonder why they always lose.

But when they made an exception in a NY extremely liberal district, the Republican WON!
Many liberal districts are actually very socially conservative! Blacks, hispanics, blue collar Catholics, urban Orthodox Jews. Liberals hate their values but win them over by promising government handouts and scaring them away from the (these are not my words) racist white Republicans or the evangelicals who will force Jewish kids to celebrate Christmas and only care about Israel because it’s part of the final plan to destroy the world or something.
Even in liberal CA, the majority of Black people voted against gay “marriage.”
The GOP needs to avoid liberal lite candidates. Why would a liberal vote for a “moderate” when they can vote for a liberal. However, as you have shown, liberals, who are social conservatives might vote for a Republican BECAUSE he is a social conservative.
The GOP establishment, as well as registered GOP voters in the primaries, need to look at history:

As I look back in U.S. history, it seems that there have been periods where social conservatism has prevailed along with fiscal liberalism (FDR era.) Then, the country was much more unified and a better place than we have now. Not saying that this is the optimal position to have, but the morally conservative position does seem to affect every day life more directly.
I cannot even imagine the converse, with social liberalism holding absolute sway with a fiscally conservative policy in place . For one thing, I don't think that untenable combination could even be possible. And another thing, it would be societal hell.
Agreed. And one of the inevitable consequences of social liberalism, is the increase of a bigger and bigger state.
If their opponents bring up the social issues they can either:
1. Claim that their opponent is changing the topic because their opponent does not have a workable economic plan, or
2. Claim that their conservative social positions are part an parcel of their overall conservative beliefs which were the foundation of decades of economic growth and public civility in this nation.
When I was doing my personal ‘vetting’ of Herman Cain, I watched an interview of him saying that he supported life from conception - even in instances of rape.
While I agree with this (throwing a murder on top of a rape is not a good thing) I did cringe.
I thought about how more than half of our country would see this man’s strong stance in this area as radical. I worried that he was *too* perfect of a conservative candidate. I worried that he would lose moderate voters and independents.
But the more I thought about it, I realized that the majority of America is worried about the rapid swing to progressive ideals. “Live and let live” worked before we had people openly advocating child sex. Common sense and normal social constraints have evaporated and now, literally, anything goes. Most people are NOT comfortable with ‘free abortions for everybody’ and do want the pendulum to swing back.

The facts in the OP article shows that politicians don’t have to be afraid to admit they are social conservatives.
I’ve always liked politicians who admitted they were 100% pro-life, regardless of the consequences.
But as it is turning out, being a social conservative is also helping candidates get elected all the more.
I sent a link of the article in the OP, along with some of the most pertinent snips, to my Republican congressman, who isn’t 100% pro-life.
In fact, I might follow it up with a letter to the editor.
If even one FReeper does the same, I’ll be very happy. :)
