Wyclef Jean Talks Sarah Palin
Women's Wear Daily ^ | September 14, 2011

WYCLEF’S BIG ON PALIN: On Monday night, at about the time the Republican presidential hopefuls were onstage to debate in Tampa, Wyclef Jean was at the Urban Zen Center in the West Village talking the future of the American right. Donna Karan was hosting an after party for her Donna Karan Collection show which earlier that day doubled as the opening of an exhibit of the Haitian artwork that had inspired the show. When the Haitian-born Jean arrived, Karan made sure to point out that both she and he are Libras. Despite his recent failed presidential bid in Haiti, the rapper still showed a penchant for politics, speaking at length about his a laptop per child initiative and his recent role as ambassador at large (“I have a diplomatic passport,” he said.) He was also at ease talking American politics.

“I have to tell you this: I am a huge fan of Sarah Palin,” the former Fugee said. “Cause she’s rad. She’s shrewd. She’s cool. Because at the end of the day, I’m for the people, because this is the United States of America...this is what America’s really about. Anyone should have the right to say, ‘Look I can do the job and this is what qualifies me to do the job.’….Now my wife probably will debate and disagree with me.”

Seeming to sense a little bit of disbelief, he qualified his statement.

“I’m not saying she could be the next president, you know, but there’s something about her. Heavy debates in my house. Whenever I say Sarah Palin, people think I’m crazy, but I like her, I do. I can like whoever. This is America, right?”

You’re in the entertainment business - you should know better.

I agree...she has more support on the left than what’s being measured!

That sucking sound is his career being flushed by the LA/NY music industry.

That said...I find myself suddenly becoming a Wyclef Jean fan!

I think he has a point. I have several friends who like Sarah, but who are afraid to say so because of the reaction of others. Still others who say they like her, can't bring themselves to say they will vote for her, if she runs, for the same reason. I have had conversations with several Palin haters about why I like Sarah and they just don't understand. I say to them, I am smart enough to look into who she is and what her record is, and THAT is why I like her. These people that I have said this to, know I am smart and that causes them to pause and at least wonder if they may not be fully informed about Palin.

I was really hoping he could have run for President of Haiti. He has seen the poverty of the people there (grew up that way in fact) and has seen what freedom and liberty can do here in America.

That's where the documentary 'Undefeated' comes in. I believe it's on PPV and other outlets. Party night - flick it on and they all discuss it! I haven't seen it yet but plan to because I'm told there is info on there we, as much as we keep up, don't know about her.

He’s in for it now. Democrats hate it when blacks leave the plantation.

I have no idea who this fellow is, but if he has the guts to state his admiration of Sarah Palin in that crowd, then people like me should have the courage to be a Palin supporter in my conservative area. I think I'll adopt his statement as my motto: "I can like whoever. This is America, right?”

I plan to have party nights as well as I am subtle on how I post things on FB. For example I just posted Newt tweet to Sarah's speech and made a comment about everyone knowing Newt is smart and yet, his thinks Palin’s Sept 3 speech is remarkable. Some of my FB friends then just have to take a look and see what Newt is talking about.

So true!! Waiting for the "Uncle Tom" and "sellout" charges to come flying at any moment.

You are doing our country a great service and to your friends, also! THANK YOU! And, also, for updating me what Newt said about Sarah’s speech.

Hmmmm....when Jean was pitching around the idea of running for President of Haiti, he was regarded by many on this forum as just another entertainer/leftist political hack who should, "shut up and sing."

Wouldn't surprise me in the least to see some of those very same critics now holding him up as a brilliant visionary.

Wyclef Jean? I’m stunned. This is the same guy whoboycotted Cincinnati in the 90’s over the police shooting.

Well I think even in that case it wasnt appropriate to be ripping on him fo running for president of Haiti. It wasnt remotely the same as, say, socialist entertainers like Sean Penn, Barbara Streisand, Matt Damon and others who actively tried to lecture and overwhelm Americans with their uneducated viewpoints. This was someone merely trying to improve the nation he was born in like anyone might feel obliged to do. And on top of that, Jean probably could have done a far better job than the crooks who have made Haiti the most impovershed nation in the West Hemisphere and more violent than most African or South American nations. And he has protested against things he felt were wrong (Cinncinati boycott) but he has never tried to lecture fans on how his way of doing things was the right way. Nor has he bad mouthed Americans within the confines of another country a la Dixie Chicks. So it was never the same.

um..is it seriously the conservative default line to always side with the police in the first place? The police force is just as corrupt an institution as anything else. I am personally acquainted with some very honorable officers but just as well aware of the ones who get away with massive abuse of powers without being held accountable and brought to justice.

Not every accusation of racism is without basis.

Luckily Wyclef can see that Sarah Palin is not a racist.
