Mark Steyn: Dems NY-09 loss due to turnout from 'Warren Harding Republicans' (Audio)

Was last night’s “stunning victory” for New York Rep.-elect Bob Turner over New York State Assemblyman David Weprin a tell-tale sign of Republicans’ future dominance over Democrats? Or just an anomaly?

Some left-leaning commentators and others in the media are already downplaying the results. But on Laura Ingraham’s radio show Wednesday, National Review columnist Mark Steyn, author of “After America: Get Ready for Armageddon,” offered his own tongue-in-cheek explanation for Democratic excuse-makers: the reappearance of 1920s-era Republicans at the modern-day voting booth.

“It’s tough turf for Democrats,” Steyn said, “because you know [Turner's district] was Republican as recently as in the Harding administration,” Steyn said. “And so you’ve got a hardcore base of Warren Harding Republicans in their late ’90s and early 100s – who clearly had a very strong turnout yesterday and I think that’s probably what made it difficult.”

For biting political satire, Steyn is the best.

They are the original “broken glass” Republicans.

Because they have no choice but to crawl over broken glass seeing that they can no longer walk.

Slightly off topic, but I know a lot of Liberals who feel that the parties kind of "switched places" at some point in the past.

Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves? And he was a Republican? Well, he'd be a Democrat today.
Jim Crow was imposed by Democrats? Well, those people would be Republicans today.
Martin Luther King was a Republican? Jackie Robinson too? Well, they would reject what the Republican Party has become.
Woodrow Wilson told racist jokes? And he was a Democrat? That's typical Republican behavior.

Then you see a district in Utah which has been consistently Republican forever -- no changes there.
And a district on Long Island that was Republican under Harding? Then Democrat for almost a century? Now voting Republican??

I don't think the parties have "switches places" at all. The Democrats were the bad guys in the 1850s and they are the bad guys today. They just sell their policies differently now. And apparently those policies aren't selling well.

The democrate are ALL about selling. Always have been.

I was curious about when blacks switched from voting republican to democrat...I discovered that it was during the Woodrow Wilson candidacy. This was despite the fact the Wilson was a well documented segregationist
