Three Charts to Email to Your Right Wing Brother in Law

Three Charts to Email to Your Right-Wing Brother-In-Law Monday 29 August 2011 by: Dave Johnson, Campaign for America's Future | Op-Ed

Federal spending dramatically increased under former president, George W. Bush and it has not increased much under President Obama. (Photo: Eric Draper / White House)

Problem: Your right-wing brother-in-law is plugged into the FOX-Limbaugh lie machine, and keeps sending you emails about "Obama spending" and "Obama deficits" and how the "Stimulus" just made things worse.

Solution: Here are three "reality-based" charts to send to him. These charts show what actually happened.

Spending

Government spending increased dramatically under Bush. It has not increased much under Obama. Note that this chart does not reflect any spending cuts resulting from deficit-cutting deals.

Deficits

Notes, this chart includes Clinton's last budget year for comparison.

The numbers in these two charts come from Budget of the United States Government: Historical Tables Fiscal Year 2012. They are just the amounts that the government spent and borrowed, period, Anyone can go look then up. Peoplewho claim that Obama "tripled the deficit" are either misled or are trying to mislead.

The Stimulus and Jobs

In this chart, the RED lines on the left side -- the ones that keep doing DOWN -- show what happened to jobs under the policies of Bush and the Republicans. We were losing lots and lots of jobs every month, and it was getting worse and worse. The BLUE lines -- the ones that just go UP -- show what happened to jobs when the stimulus was in effect. We stopped losing jobs and started gaining jobs, and it was getting better and better. The leveling off on the right side of the chart shows what happened as the stimulus started to wind down: job creation leveled off at too low a level.

It looks a lot like the stimulus reversed what was going on before the stimulus.

Conclusion: THE STIMULUS WORKED BUT WAS NOT ENOUGH!

More False Things

These are just three of the false things that everyone "knows." Some others are (click through): Obama bailed out the banks, businesses will hire if they get tax cuts, health care reform cost $1 trillion, Social Security is a Ponzi Scheme or is "going broke", government spending "takes money out of the economy."

Why This Matters

These things really matter. We all want to fix the terrible problems the country has. But it is so important to know just what the problems are before you decide how to fix them. Otherwise the things you do to try to solve those problems might just make them worse. If you get tricked into thinking that Obama has made things worse and that we should go back to what we were doing before Obama -- tax cuts for the rich, giving giant corporations and Wall Street everything they want -- when those are the things that caused the problems in the first place, then we will be in real trouble.

Why do you have to 'scramble' all the way back to Clinton's administration to refute this? The real dilemma is the spending and deficit increase from Bush to Obama, period!

Clinton was forced into a balanced/low-deficit budget by a REPUBLICAN CONGRESS! Nothing more.

Try forcing these idiots to look at the defict from say, 2007 when it was $160B and compare it to now, approaching $1.5 trillion and rising in the Obamacare outyears. We are on top of a sea of red ink and sinking - increasingly quickly. Clinton was Clinton - BJs and sex scandals and whoring. He was forced into whatever comparison record they're trotting out now. Don't get fooled by it.

This country has bought into an affirmative action impulse purchase, and we cannot wait until the store opens in November 2012 to 'exhange' this f@cking purchase!

I went to the site and now I need to take a shower.

I'm so sorry, I posted the whole thing (it didn't say I had to excerpt) in the hopes it would all come through. I, like you, do not really want to give this site hits.

Don't forget in 1995 Clinton produced a “Budget plan” that called for $200 billion deficits until 2000. It failed in the US Senate 99-0. Not even Democrats would vote for it.

The GOP Congress, not Clinton, balanced the budget. Clinton had not plan to ever balance the budget and was dragged kicking and screaming to the table by the GOP Congress.

Well it was the Republican Vice President who declared “budgets deficits don’t matter”. At what point did the GOP have its “come to Jesus” moment regarding our debt? When they had to turn the Nations credit card over to the opposition? I will have no respect for the GOP until it owns up to its part in this mess we are in.

Shoot, I tried to post one of your charts, I guess Facebook doesn’t allow that because it wouldn’t post.

Great charts though!

Both parties are to blame.

Bush and the last GOP Congress Deficit 2006. $169 billion

0 and the last Dem Congress Deficit 2010. $1.7 Trillion

If you cannot grasp the difference between those two numbers you are far too ignorant to be voting.

Whoever got the seat when the music stopped in 08

Love the way you Democrat propaganda bots ignore the fact the Democrats took over Congress in Jan 2007. Funny how you all are so pathetically afraid to ever hold the Dems accountable for their actions

Spending increased under Reagan too.

The reason is a Dem-controlled House in a time of war will attach every ragtag, corrupt social program to military spending.

They know they have the best chance to get it through then because a Repub President will NEVER short-change the military by vetoing the bill.

Dems are corrupt weasels.

Cost of US wars since 9/11? At least $3.7 trillion dollars...all off budget. But the real reason for our debt is Social Security...right Lackey?

And we have no respect for a Democrat Party propaganda bot too stupid to realize the difference between $169 billion and $1.7 trillion in deficit spending. So when can we expect you Democrat party bots to hold your political leadership accountable?

Utterly hypocritical for you to posture as "Debt hawks" when you continually refuse to hold your Democrat Party leadership to account for it's actions

................Craig’s numbers show that the deficit under Bush jumped up immediately which probably was due to the war with Iraq..............................

We could also come up with a chart of expenditures of what now constitutes the Dept. of Homeland Security.

Do you remember all the unneeded crap that the states were receiving in 2002-04 gratis from the US government. Stuff that was given to them to combat any potential Muzzie threat?

I remember my small RI town got new harbor patrol boats and supplies free, on top of all the rest of the communications, police, fire, junk. Then, once there, the local towns/states had to support all this new junk with added personnel, police units, fire departments, communications, maintenance. So the junk formed a tri-fecta: The US spent money; forcing the states to spend future money; causing the counties and town to rachet up their budgets.

But, let’s have somebody individually chart Homeland Security expenditures, along with all those duplicated do-nothing personnel sitting in the airports in their fancy TSA uniforms.

Yeah...I know the arguments...the results of their captitulation to the liberal appeasement darkside pale in comparison to liberal largesse...there is no argument on this, regardless of how no-ball/backbone,lilly-livered,ass-licking,bed-wetting, cry-baby excuses and reasons you want to put it as an excuse for RINOs, they still pale in comparison.

Amazingly I haven’t been unfriended yet. Poor liberal girl, she has no idea we’re talking about her - it was a friend of hers - a liberal male who made the comments about the cigarette tax - facts are such nasty little things.

I so want to post this url on her site but I will refrain. There are so many good facts and charts here, I like her, I just so want to make her understand.

How can a girl move to a liberal state and be so brainwashed? Same thing happened to my mother when she worked in a college in Oregon! She had a HUGE screaming fit when I told her I didn’t like John Kerry! “He’s a WAR HERO”, it went downhill from there.

Silly I guess to argue, just raises my blood pressure.

So what does January 2007 mean to you?

It seems like something rather decisive happened in this nations politics to lead to massive deficits that were previously declining and massive escalations in unemployment from 4.5 percent.

I think I know but I’m not sure you do.
