Despite hysterical headlines of an historic storm: Irene is a Category 1 Hurricane
By: Liz Berry Saturday August 27, 2011 7:44 am
cross post from IfLizWereQueen The Truth of Irenes Strength? not nearly that of her related headlines for the past two days from the US media.
Here is the latest report from the National Hurricane Center as of 6:03 AM Central Time and the hurricane still has not made landfall on the US shores.
*Note: A Category 1 is the lowest category on the Saffir-Simpson scale before a storm is classified as a tropical storm.
I guess theyll have to dream up another distraction to keep our minds off the jobs that they are not creating, the Keystone Pipeline, and other real issues as these headlines have now proven themselves to be what they are: Hyperboles of the first degree. [On the plus side maybe this is their idea of stimulating the economy as no doubt millions of people went out and purchased items they might not have otherwise bought--water, flashlights, motel rooms inland, etc. Of course this may not have been on the plus side for many of these people as they might not have been able to afford these purchases.]
But the problem and danger with this type of exaggerated and irresponsible reporting is the same as that of the little boy who cried wolf. Maybe next time it really will be a Category 3 hurricane and thousands of people will not heed the warnings.
Addendum [added after publication of post]
This is not like it is the first time that the public have been grossly mislead by false impending apocalyptic warnings from the main stream media. Only a few months ago they were predicting that major portions of the West Coast were going to be consumed by a tsumini, resulting from the Japanese earthquake.
Anyone that has watched east coast hurricanes knew that it would be a “tropical storm” by the time it gets to the north..
Fox just showed a few loose shingles on a roof in Va..
There may be a bad rain storm in NYC and Boston but the panic being built up is unforgivable
They all flew home on the same plane?
If you haven't actually went through a hurricane, especially a big (area wise) one, which travelled the type path this one is (I went through Katrina - big and same type path) you have no business poo-pooing folks who take "extreme"easure. If you have lived through one and still mock those who take these "extreme" measures, you're a fool.
I don't believe I implied that such things were absolutely positively impossible and had totally zero chance of ever occurring.
I merely meant to say that the media was hyping the storm.
But I guess you disagree.
And we lost power for 10 days with Hurricane Gustav which barely got national coverage — if any — even though it basically shut down Baton Rouge for most of that time. National Guard were here to “keep the peace”, but it was laughable because the culture here is not like it is in N.O. No lootings or signs of any trouble. People helping each other if there was a need. Very different.
Glad we don’t have your winters, though! :))
Hurricane Irene: Threatens East Coast With Expected Cat. 4 Devastation
Hurricane Irene could be a Cat. 4 by Thursday
It's Morning Express like you've never seen it before! Hear from Robin Meade
This is a very large storm and it will rain an awful lot on New York City ~ they know the total throughout capacity of all their sewers ~ the expected rainfall is unusual.
Experience disagrees. You can parse it however you like, but most of our state was without power for at least 3 days and much of it 5-7 days. And it was a weak cat 1 when it hit our shores.
Since you don’t have a location in your profile, what does your experience tell you? How many cat 1’s in heavily wooded areas already soggy with rain have you experienced?
We had a guy in my county die of west nile virus the other day. When the disease first appeared you would think it was going to be like “The Stand” with millions dead in the streets.
Turned out that the guy who died the other day was in his 70s and had emphysema.
I’ve never said or done anything but offer sympathy and monetary aid for people dealing with tornadoes, including Joplin. What does that have to do with this weather event?
Robroy got banned for having an argument with people who couldn't discuss things and only wanted to give emotional responses. If he had backed away from that discussion, he'd still be here.
I am backing away.
Well, they've had plenty of Preparation and Warning. Almost a week's worth.
What the people of OKLAHOMA wouldn't have given for a WEEK'S NOTICE!
But you didn't hear them whining about it, or the media running around like chickens with their heads cut off.
Even so-called conservative FOX is shilling for Obama by excusing him for the recession due to the weather.
Irene Throws Obama Another Curveball Amid Push to Refocus on Economy

President Obama’s been blaming “bad luck” lately for the state of the economy. Then along comes Hurricane Irene.
No, I understand. The media is hyping this, I agree with that, but it is not without precedent. My responses were based on *experience* with this kind of storm in this area, that a week without power is likely.
If you prepare for a week without power and you still have power, IMO, that is great.
It’s significant because people are mocking the severity of a cat 1 storm, people need to take it seriously, people can and have died in a cat 1 storm that’s why I posted about the guy in NC. I don’t care about car crash statistics, I am talking about people making lite of a situation which can and already has turned deadly.
Reminds me of the media induced hysteria over the bird flu and other stories they have manufactured in the past. When you have talking heads on TV 24 hours a day, you have to manufacture drivel for them to spout. TV news is all useless bullshit.——
The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace
alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary (like a hyped storm)
...there certainly seems to be increasing hype, and more
“necessity” so it seems to have a population “controlled” by a ‘potential’ crisis.
Only thing missing id CNN’s row boat prop.
Wow! Great picture!
