Solar Energy Panels Not So Hot
The Winston Review ^ | August 16, 2011 | -TWR-

“Solon Corp will stop manufacturing solar panels in Tucson by mid-October, ending the facility’s three-year run,” reports the Phoenix Business Journal. “The company will lay off about 60 employees when it shuts down that part of the Tucson operation. It was the state’s first solar panel production line.”

In another blow to the so-called solar power industry, the Boston Herald also reports, “Evergreen Solar Inc., the Massachusetts clean-energy company that received millions in state subsidies from the Patrick administration for an ill-fated Bay State factory, has filed for bankruptcy, listing $485.6 million in debt.”

The so-called green scheme was criticized by the Massachusetts Republican Party. “Evergreen, which closed its taxpayer-supported Devens factory in March and cut 800 jobs, has been trying to rework its debt for months.”

In recent months moreover, serious “green energy” concerns have been raised across California, as outlined here.

If you can’t make a success producing solar energy in tucson Arizona, you can’t do it anywhere

I worked there for 7 months last year- the sun is out something like 330 days per year

I’ve lived in Tucson and readily agree....this is the one place where you could pay off your investment in just a couple of years. But the real key to selling solar panels....is convincing a guy into accepting a real long-term investment and pay-back. After you hear what it costs to buy and have it installed...most folks start to question the whole idea. In thirty years, most all houses will be built with solar panels because utility bills will be so high...but for the time being, it’s just a fancy gadget with significant costs.

Well let’s see if I understand this correctly.

The state of Massachusetts collected millions of dollars from the tax payers of Massachusetts in order to give those dollars to Evergreen Solar Inc.

Those dollars were spent to build a factory and buy equipment to install in this private concern.

So this private concern failed and will be dissolved in bankruptcy.

Subsidies not being debt will not be recoverable by the state in bankruptcy.

The equipment in factory will be sold at auction and will likely be bought by Chinese businesses at pennies on the dollar because they dominate the solar panel industry these days.

So in effect the people of Massachusetts are subsidizing the Chinese solar industry.

More years ago than I care to think about I read an interesting article about the recycling industry. There were “junk dealers “ and recyclers who made a living on the edge. Government got interested and subsidized people to get into the business. The people who really understand sere marginalized and had trouble competing against the subsidized folks and many went bust. When the government subsidies ended the subsidized folks went belly up since they really couldn't compete and stay alive. The subsidized folks never really wanted to complete in the first place, they just wanted the easy government money. Well here we are again, of course they never taught that at “Harvard”..

Yup....and the Chinese solar industry exists solely to make money off of the “Progressive Utopian Green” crowd...
or as P.T. Barnum so aptly put it....”there's a sucker born every minute”
or as my uncle used to say....You need water and salt in your system to survive...But u cant survive on sea-water!..U figure it out!

That sounds a lot like what happens with foreign aid.The indigenous people have developed ways of dealing with things; the experts step in and strap on some enlightenment, then everything goes bust.

The green is drying up.

Not quite. Someone needs to get to the bottom of the windmill scam, which most if not all power companies have been forced into by the handwriting on the wall.

Not by efficiencies, not by cost, not by logic, or reason, or value, not by any factors that ought to be valid other than the idiocy of green.

Same for high speed rail, another scam of monster proportions that is still out there waiting for cash, and believe me Mr Government Cash is dying to be at the head of the line of idiot contributors using our money.
