Is it possible that the guy was near re-enlistment and this was all a put on, that he simply didn’t re-enlist or was refused re-enlistment? I have no idea. Just asking.

Yup, certainly possible. Or, that he knew he was going to be discharged shortly and figured the military wouldn’t go after him. Appears he figured correctly.

Just asking.If you read his other writings on the internet, it appears that he was outspokenly anti-gay. For this, they labeled him with a personality disorder and sent him home pending his discharge. Then he announced on the internet that he was AWOL and demanded that either he be arrested or Obama be arrested. Nobody bit. The army said he wasn't AWOL and the discharge proceeded.
