In one of the first major parts of the Republican nomination process, we have a winner at the Iowa straw poll. Underneath are the winners, and other relevant numbers that have come out so far:

Michele Bachmann with 4,823 votes

Ron Paul with approximately 4,600 votes
Tim Pawlenty with approximately 2,200 votes
Rick Perry had 712 write-in votes.

16,892 ballots were cast. Rick Santorum came in fourth. That's about 3,000 more than expected.

Yep, I think one of the biggest losers here today is Romney. He cannot be happy about his showing. There is nothing good about his results. Cain beat him nearly 3-1.

If romney is the nominee... I write in Sarah Palin... but that ain't going to happen because mittens is as much a commiecrat as obama. I will not have to write in Palin’s name either! I'll just check the box. :-)

Good for Mrs. Bachmann, but people have forgotten when Bachmann hired Rollins she actually purchased the Huchster’s old Iowa network. Given that and the fact that she was in her back yard and was all over the TV, this isn’t quite as impressive as some want to believe.

Bush and Romney in winning the straw poll each won with 31%. Bachmann’s win was smaller.

Straw polls such as this one are simply a meaningless joke.

Ames Straw Poll results, August 2007
1) Romney
2) Huckabee
3) Brownback
4) Tancredo
5) Paul
6) T. Thompson
7) F. Thompson
8) Giuliani
9) Hunter
10) McCain (0.7%)
11) Cox

McCain ended up winning the nomination.

The 2007 straw poll gave a boost to Romney and Huckabee, both of whom then went on to stay in longer than most. The 2007 straw poll did knock out Tommy Thompson. But that's about it, as far as effects. Finishing tenth did not keep McCain from getting the nomination.

So I wouldn't read too much into today's straw poll, one way or the other.

Bachmann also gave out some 6,000 tickets or so it was said in one of the Fox reports. I suspect Paul gave a lot out also.

McCain could win south of the Mason Dixon line because of his Military service. Romney cannot. I would not underestimate the significance of this day for Romney.

I support Palin and it would only have meant that Palin would have worked the straw poll... invested a lot of time and money in getting votes out and buying tickets and schmoozing etc... but as far as a reflection of the outcome of the primary process... it would mean exactly what it means today. She would have won a “buy the vote” process at a Iowa Republican Party fund raiser... and there is nothing wrong with that... but straw polls are not scientific... not reflective of reality and Robert's Rules of Order hold straw polls in great disdain... and the UN has one before they elect any new Secretary General.

No, they are not. It is a very good indication of where the grass roots heads are at. And the good showing of Bachmann and Paul are a very clear indication that the people are done with the politics as usual DC Political Establishement.

Rather then sneering at these results, the GOP Establishement should take a message from them. This is a serious wake up call for you all.

Tpaw thinks CO2 is a pollutant. I’m surprised he got any votes.
