In one of the first major parts of the Republican nomination process, we have a winner at the Iowa straw poll. Underneath are the winners, and other relevant numbers that have come out so far:

Michele Bachmann with 4,823 votes

Ron Paul with approximately 4,600 votes
Tim Pawlenty with approximately 2,200 votes
Rick Perry had 712 write-in votes.

16,892 ballots were cast. Rick Santorum came in fourth. That's about 3,000 more than expected.

I’m a little surprised to see Pawlenty make 3rd.

Good to hear not that it means anything. The Paul-bots usually overtake everything and Bachmann overcame that. Good for her. Not sure if I am gonna write her a check but I like what she’s saying.

It’s quite an interesting development of the situation actually. I am not at all unhappy with this outcome personally.

This straw poll has about as much importance as an NFL Pre-Season game.

This certainly doesn’t reflect the choice of a lot of us folks in SW Florida.

It is almost laughable if it wasn’t so important.

I would rather see Santorum in 3rd. He’s about the only “establishment” candidate I could vote for without wincing...much.

it means something if these two candidates continue to develop momentum. it means the field will narrow. It means Mitt Romney is one step farther away from the Presidency too. Thumbs up!

I was dismayed to hear that tickets had to be purchased to get to straw vote. More disappointed that candidates bought tickets for voters.

I guess money can buy you an election.
