[history]
The are-they-or-aren't-they gay jokes about Ernie and Bert have a long history. I think an image of them holding hands was carved by early man in the caves at Lascaux.
But could the two actually get married? Huffington Post reports today that more than 900 people have signed petition urging the makers of "Sesame Street" get married. Lair Scott started the petition

I never let my kids watch Sesame Street. I thought it was dumb. Same with Mr. Rogers.
To: NYer
Just stupid.
As spokesman for The Children’s Television Workshop said years ago Bert and Ernie can’t be gay because “they don’t have genitals”.

Leave it to the left to take something children oriented, lovable and innocent and inject their BS into it. Next the Cookie monster will be forced to eat arugula!1

I knew Jim Hensen. He was the creator. I delivered to his office in 1980’s Manhattan. He was beautiful decent human being. He cared about everybody. A down to earth person. I cried when he died like a friend. But he kept politics mostly out of his characters. He would never agree to this BS. IMHO.

I've reached 41, born the year Sesame Street began, and never once thought they were anything but child aged characters. So are these people now saying not only should they gay marry (because they think they are gay) but that we should watch children gay marry on public TV?
Personally, I liked Oscar the grouch much better. He was always my favorite. And didn't Sesame Street take place or was/is filmed in Pittsburgh? Sorry, no gay marriage for muppet childhood characters!
Have any Heterosexual muppets got married? I know Miss Piggy used to chase Kermit, but I don't think that was on Sesame Street and that was a whole inter-species thing— the logical next step after gay marriage??!!

Though no fan of "Sesame Street", I loved "The Muppet Show". Henson was a genius, and also a fellow Maryland Terrapin. He is enshrined in bronze on the main campus in College Park:

After watching numerous episodes of Sesame Street, I have to say that Bert and Ernie are not only not gay, but Ernie is the most annoying roommate who ever existed.

I knew Jim Hensen. I also cried when he passed away. He filled my daughter's childhood with wonderfully entertaining programs like:

No. Of course - they are not gay - they have no genitals - they are puppets. As characters they are best friends - roommates - and sleep in separate beds.
