Net immigration quadrupled to 237,000 a year between 1997 and 2007. In 2009 it was 196,000. 3 million immigrants have arrived since 1997, states Migration Watch UK, an independent body, focused on immigration-related concerns.
A migrant still arrives almost every minute. And, its the cost issue that resonates with many citizens. As Migration Watch UK points out, We must build a new home every six minutes for new migrants.
Unfortunately, debate in the United Kingdom has been hindered by a culture of politically-correct censorship, stress critics.
But criticism is becoming difficult to suppress. As the UKs Daily Express noted recently, PM David Cameron was given fresh warning to honour his pledge to cut immigration after research revealed that 71 per cent nearly three-quarters of the public said numbers were too high.
Unlike the States, the small islands immigration issues are harder to ignore.
