Ross Perot Was Right

Ross Perot Was Right On July 18, 2011, in Economy, by Tim

Spotted over at Patrick.net this morning, 1992 Presidential candidate Ross Perot’s warning about a steady decline in U.S. wages from almost 20 years ago sounds quite prophetic. All you have to do is substitute “China” for “Mexico” when you hear about wages converging at six dollars an hour – ours going down, theirs going up.

Sadly, no one talks about his much – instead, you get a political debate about taxes and spending. And, of course, monetary policy at the Federal Reserve that is largely based on a consumer price index that doesn’t distinguish between imported goods and goods that are produced domestically only exacerbates the problem.

"Yeah, apply that to the Constitution and see where it takes you...."

Import tariffs were written into both the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution.

Too much is wrong with the country and the world now. Even those opposed to Obama disagree with each other and fight each other. Too many issues as well. Perot might have been right in 92, but he ruined the election for Bush, and I am not a fan of either Bush, but hate Clinton.

The following is undisputed by both sides of the free trade agreement.

1) China Manipulates their Currency
2) China has no EPA
3) China has no EEOC
4) China has no minimum wage laws
5) U.S. wages cannot compete with Chinese slave labor.

To you this is fair and the U.S. workers?

BTW, the way have you ever called a computer help desk from overseas? They are worthless! I rather talk to an American that knows what the hell they are talking about and can speak English! I almost always get way better professional help from U.S. citizens then from India, Philippines, etc..

“...I fear you still believe in collectivism in the sense you want to retrain your fellow AMericans in the workforce to go upmarket and compete at higher profit margins.”

I want them to be free to retrain themselves if they see fit, and I hope they see fit to do so. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (as seen fit by the citizen) are my priorities. I do think one should always be learning and rethinking, but one doesn’t require govt to do such things.

It does sound like we are in basic agreement.

All my important retraining was picked up the hard way, on the streets (and under chandeliers). ;)

“To you this is fair and the U.S. workers?”

International trade is war with less noise. Fairness has nothing to do with it. While some are spending time trying to get the other side to play fair, I am busy beating the other side. Screw fairness, I’m here to win the war.

You will waste your life if you spend it attempting to elicit fairness from unfair people. You can’t make a good deal with a bad guy.

I live in the mountains. They aren’t fair either. They are dangerous and don’t care if I live or die, and I can’t get any concessions from them.

And I like it that way.

I was in Uni as a Finance major undergrad when I first found FR.

I was on FR since I was in high school. That was around the era of IMPOTUS.

It’s a rigid poker game so we are going to lose in the end.

The decline of US manufacturing as a source of employment is due much to America’s predatory labor unions. On the plus side, cheap factory labor in China and elsewhere overseas has been of immense benefit to American consumers and has raised our living standards. It has also proven to be a source of strength to the US by strengthening our economic and political ties with China, India, and other emerging economies.

That is true. America is losing the war.

America is losing the war you accurately described. Do you like that? You prefer we just lose? Wake up America.

Wake up.

Oh, it’s an excellent example. Let’s see you make the argument that the object of U.S. policy is to provide Mexican farmers with jobs.

Import tariffs were written into both the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution.

To raise revenue, not engage in industrial policy as your typical protectionist expects us to believe.

BTW, the average Tarrif in 2010 was 1.3%.

That's an interesting statistic: can you prove it? (Apart from throwing letters at me).

“Free trade” did not cause the recession. If you cannot see it, then . . . .

Somewhere around about 20 years ago, the fundamental concepts of trade and patriotism began to diverge.

Conservatives by and large have been and are, comfortable in our patriotism, so nobody questioned whether we could be wrong about something so basic to our very being.

Trade on the other hand, especially capitalism as we knew it then, had been the very weapon we had used, to defeat history's most powerful adversary any nation ever had confronted. The USSR. The mighty, and dangerous Soviet Union.

We stood down that danger, through the bravery of our men and women in uniform. But also with capitalism.

Unfortunately we then went into hibernation. Without an enemy to confront, we stopped paying attention. Somewhere along the way - that process by which we stood down the Soviet Union, became deployed against us.

But we were sleeping. Content in our patriotism, and our capitalism. Never questioning either.

Back to 20 years ago. Those two diverged. Capitalism, and patriotism.

They diverged, when "globalist" capitalists with no interest in keeping America the world's strongest, richest, most advanced wonder in human history - began making their own money, by directly hurting AMERICA's national interests. Sending factories to communists. Firing millions of working Americans. Exporting technology. Increasing the supply of angry democrat-voting unemployed.

It seems in hindsight, that 20 years ago as US conservatives unconsciously faced the fork in the road that divergence presented to Americans - far too many chose the wrong side, at that time. The side of those destroying the very things which made America so powerful and great. And now, seem determined to pretend we are not going the wrong direction. Pulling the pillow over their heads, to shut out that alarm.............

Unfortunately, the future of our nation, is the other way. The one - we are running lock-step in "free trade" groupthink denial away from...

And the only difference between you and I is that you think that slapping some arbitrary tariff on products will fix things . . . .

Not only was he right, and not only would he have been elected if he had not also been a paranoid dwarf, but the "missing 19 million votes" are the key to the next GOP landslide.

THE PEROT VOTERS ARE THE KEY TO EVERYTHING, GODDAMNIT!
