Great places to retire can be found outside of Florida and Arizona. In fact, many can be found outside of the U.S. entirely. Safe, attractive and affordable places to retire are scattered across the globe, from Latin America to Asia and even Europe. We've narrowed our list to eight overseas retirement hot spots.
Two factors critical to retirees (and their wallets) shaped our choices: cost of living and health care. To make our picks we consulted several experts on travel, tourism and overseas retirement, including Jennifer Stevens, executive editor of International Living, and Kathleen Peddicord, publisher of LiveandInvestOverseas.com. We also gave added weight to the cost of living, real estate and health care components of International Living's Global Retirement Index of the top 25 countries for retirees.

Canada is getting more conservative all the time. Any opinions?
1. Merida, Mexico
2. Lunigiana, Italy
3. Bocas del Toro, Panama
4. Granada, Nicaragua
5. Nha Trang, Vietnam
6. Roatan, Honduras
7. Bearn, France
8. Corozal Town, Belize
Having lived in France, Bearn is appealing.
If it were only warmer. I have never considered living in another country and probably still wouldn’t because of family, but the thought of another eight years of Obama makes me think about it.
Caracas, Venezuela, Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, Baghdad, Iraq, Karachi, Pakistan, Mogadishu, Somalia, Cape Town, South Africa,... There are many wonderful places for global-minded Americans to move to and be planted in.
I’ve been thinking about this. I’m seriously thinking of going to Australia. IMHO, our country has about three to six years on its present course before we go Greek.
On to the list:
Merida, Mexico
No thanks. I’d like to stay alive and avoid being kidnapped.
Lunigiana, Italy
Italy’s about to implode.
Bocas del Toro, Panama
See Mexico.
Granada, Nicaragua
See Mexico.
Nha Trang, Vietnam
Srsly?
Roatan, Honduras
See Mexico.... no it’s not that bad but it has that potential. I have a friend with in-laws down there and he tells me it’s nice.
Bearn, France
France would be a nice country to live except its filled with French people.
Corozal Town, Belize
People say nice things about Belize. They speak English for one. Labor is so cheap that Expats have a very hard time getting their wives to come back to the US.
HE can go to Kenya, or someplace; this is my country, he obviously HATES it. I don’t.
obama needs to retire abroad. not us
To those that will leave if we lose an election, begone. NOW. We don’t need to waste the oxygen it takes to keep your coward ass alive.
To those that have left, and yet seem to make comments concerning this country, stay the hell out, we have not missed you.
I was born in this country, I have fought and bled for this country, and by God I will be buried in this country.
If you fit into the first two categories, do not waste your time responding to this post. I have no desire to converse with cowards.
He won’t be going to Kenya if he wins another term. That thought sickens me beyond belief, but I am trying to steel myself for the possibility.
Have you checked it? You can’t just “go” to Australia or New Zealand or a lot of other places unless you are:
rich (can deposit millions, or start a business and employ people)
young (check ageism in Australia)
in some places, speak the language (speaking french gets you extra points for Canaduh
Many so-called civilized countries set a high bar for immigration, no indication the hollywooders or global elitists at the UN have accused them of violating human rights
What is your plan if Obama is re-elected? Just live with it?
What about Costa Rica?
Roatan is different than the main land. Much different: it runs off of tourism, so they don’t suffer any foolishness.
With that said you MUST ensure the property you are buying is clear of any lien. There was a scam involving judges giving property back to the sellers because of bribes.
I’m headed for Slow Poke, TX
I will contend with that situation when, or if, it arises. I will not wring my hands and makes plans to run away like a pitiful little coward.
You plans may differ.
