Perry doing better with Texas Republicans
Public Policy Polling ^ | July 6, 2012

Posted on 07/06/2011 12:26:38 PM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

Although Rick Perry's general election poll standing in Texas is less than impressive Republican primary voters in the state have warmed up to him over the first six months of the year and he's now the clear favorite in the state.

31% of Republicans say Perry would be their first choice as nominee next year compared to 15% for Mitt Romney, 11% for Michele Bachmann, 9% for Ron Paul and Sarah Palin, 8% for Newt Gingrich, 6% for Herman Cain, and 2% for Tim Pawlenty.

Perry's strength with GOP voters in his home state is a new development. When PPP looked at Texas in January only 9% of Republicans said Perry was their top choice, putting him in 6th place overall and well behind Mike Huckabee's 24%. But Perry's shown a lot more interest in a bid since then, Huckabee's out of the picture, and Gingrich who was in second place at 17% in January has tanked. Perry has likely picked up a lot of the lost support of his fellow southern candidates in the race.

If Perry ends up not running there's basically a three way tie at the top in the state with Romney getting 17% to 16% for Bachmann, 14% for Palin, 11% for Gingrich, 10% for Paul, 8% for Cain, and 5% for Jon Huntsman. Those numbers show what's becoming a pretty common pattern- Bachmann leads Romney 22-15 with the 'very conservative' voters who constitute the largest segment of the Republican electorate. But Romney's strength in the middle- leading Bachmann 19-9 with moderates and 21-13 with 'somewhat conservative' voters gives him the overall advantage.

One thing very clear in the Texas numbers- Republicans there don't care for Ron Paul. Just 37% hold a favorable opinion of him to 45% with a negative one. It's pretty much a given that Paul's chances at the nomination are close to zero but the fact that his fellow GOP voters don't even like him takes Paul's troubles to a different level.......

Good news for Romney’s eventual VP pick.

As expected, Perry is quite popular with the former Huckabee contingent, takes almost no support away from Romney, won’t crack 35% of the pubbie primary vote even in his own state, and soaks up southern evangelical votes that Palin or Bachmann will need to carry the nomination. Meanwhile, he’ll be lucky to break double-digits in CA, FL, MI and other places that the race will actually be decided.

Perfect stalking horse for Mitt.

The media is certainly pulling for the RINO candidates

It's not just the MSM, this is good 'ol Nate...

PPP surveyed 400 usual Texas Republican primary voters from June 25th to 27th

. The margin of error for the survey is +/-4.9%. This poll was not paid for or authorized by any campaign or political organization. PPP surveys are conducted through automated telephone interviews. PPP is a Democratic polling company, but polling expert Nate Silver of the New York Times found that its surveys in 2010 actually exhibited a slight bias toward Republican candidates.

Well, if good 'ol Nate said so it's must be ok, right?

We all remember good 'ol Nate right?

In 2007, writing under the pseudonym "Poblano," Silver began to publish analyses and predictions related to the 2008 United States presidential election. At first this work appeared on the political blog Daily Kos, but in March 2008 Silver established his own website, FiveThirtyEight.com.

Texas has open primaries. Anyone can vote either in the republican or democrat primary but not both. Just because someone voted in the "Republican" primary does not mean they voted for a conservative or that they are actually a republican. It only means they voted on that day, nothing more.

"On the primary election day, you simply request the ballot for the party primary in which you want to vote, and they will mark your voter registration card. You will get a new registration card every 2 years, so even if it gets stamped "Republican," by the next major primary you will have a blank one again."

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Does_Texas_have_an_open_or_closed_primary

When little bammy runs unopposed by any other dem candidates in 2012 this is going to be a huge problem. The dems do not have to bother to vote in the dem primary and are free to screw up the republican primary which will have several candidates.

Lucky for us we have good 'ol Nate to show us the way.

.

If it were held today, Bachmann. She’s the only one telling the painful truths.

But its still real early. I hope a real business guy or gal with conservative credibility will step in. I don’t think being a professional politician is desirable. (unlike the media who want a “experienced” politician, I want someone experienced in making a dollar instead of taxing)

Then Michele Bachmann is an odd choice since she is a legislator (makes laws, establishes taxes).

Perry has been Lt. Gov and Gov of Texas since 1998 -- he has executive experience -- TX is something pretty big to run. He's brought a lot of business to the state by getting regulations and lawsuits under control and has cut government spending.

Not too shabby.

I wish you well and I will vote for the GOP Primary winner.

Perfect stalking horse for Mitt.

***** "A stalking horse is a person who tests a concept with someone or mounts a challenge against them on behalf of an anonymous third party. If the idea proves viable and/or popular, the anonymous figure can then declare their interest and advance the concept with little risk of failure. If the concept fails, the anonymous party will not be tainted by association and can either drop the idea completely or bide their time and wait until a better moment for launching an attack."

*****

So, Mitt's going to become Perry? Or Perry's testing a concept for ??? -- no that doesn't fit....

You are so lost.

Perry is a 10 year governor of the most productive state in the union with the most job creation of any state since the Obama recession. Why does Perry need any reason to run for President other than that. He doesn't need to be a media creation or a stalking horse. Palin was a 2 1/2 year governor and the VP candidate of the losing ticket last election. Bachman is a Congresswoman, Romeny is a has been, Cain is a businessman.

Perry is the new face on the scene with the record to beat Obama. If, IF there was a stalking horse it would be Bachman to siphon off Palin.

Perry has the record and the longevity in governing to make him attractive to the GOP as someone who can beat Obama. That is why there is a buzz about him.

It’s just that sort of thinking that got us Dole and McCain.
On paper the best candidate.
In an election, they don’t turn out the base.

We don’t need someone the media can blow up with 11th our expose’s of their record. They won’t give Perry a pass like they do a Dem.

And I DONT WANT an EXPERIENCE POLITICIAN! The experienced politicians have GOT us where we are today 14 T $ in Debt! Yep, the Dems and Repubs playing Good guy Bad guy, meanwhile beating the taxpayer up.

I want an candidate that DOES NOT owe the Established party anything.

That’s the attraction of a “non traditional” candidate.

The Dems thought they had one on Obama, who turns out to be just another big government tax and spend democrat.

We (conservatives) need a REAL conservative, not beholding to the corrupt good-ol boys network (Perry is a prime example of cronyism and big government on the Republican side).

The reason there is BUZZ on him is the Libtards WANT us to run someone like Slick Rick. ANd so the NTTIMES, SALON, etc all are writing glowing articles......They same way they did McCain and Dole......

And remember Rick Perry was Lt. Gov (more powerful than the Gov office in TX) when Bush was Gov and running for president in 2000 on his record as TX Gov.

So Perry has been at the helm in one form or another (has strengthened the Gov’s office because so many appointments over the years were his) since 1998.

["Perry was part of the "Pit Bulls", a group of Appropriations members who sat on the lower dais in the committee room (or "pit") who pushed for austere [Texas] state budgets during the 1980s."] Source

Karl Rove claims Rick Perry as his candidate in Perry's FIRST campaign for the Texas Agriculture Commission. [From what I’ve found this was their only collaboration]

Perry was a Texas Democrat (not a liberal Democrat). He switched to the Republican Party in 1989. In 1990 Perry won the election (against Jim Hightower) to head the Agricultural Committee (a post Perry was well suited for as having come from a cotton farming family -- raised and worked the land -- and had a degree in Animal Science from Texas A&M). He was reelected in 1994 to that office in a landslide (62%). He did not seek reelection for a 3rd term and ran for Lt. Gov of Texas (1998), winning in a 3 way race, in a hard fought campaign against John Sharp (D).

["Perry thus became the state's first Republican lieutenant governor since Reconstruction, taking office on January 19, 1999 until his ascension to the governorship on December 21, 2000 upon the resignation of then-Governor George W. Bush."] Source

In that 1998 campaign year, the G.W. Bush camp (which included Karl Rove) was campaigning for W's reelection for Texas Gov (1st elected in 1994) and was at odds with Rick Perry's hard nosed campaign against John Sharp for Lt. Gov. Karl Rove told Perry to soft peddle to lift Bush's numbers in minority groups, Perry refused. Bush won reelection as Texas Governor. Perry won office as Lt. Gov. (arguably a stronger office than TX governor).

["Bush won by 1.4 million votes, Perry by fewer than 70,000. There were harsh words afterward; Rove and Dave Carney, a top Perry strategist, now are bitter foes."] Source

Then there was this in the TX Monthly about the 2010 governor's race:

October 2009: “....It would not be surprising to find that Karl Rove had a hand in this somewhere. The Bushies are definitely in the Hutchison camp, and there is no love lost between them and the Perry camp. The tension (according to Perry team members whom I interviewed on this subject last year) dates all the way back to Perry’s race for lieutenant governor in 1998, when Rove insisted that Perry stick with a positive message even while he was being pounded by John Sharp. Meanwhile, in the view of the Perry camp, Rove was trying to turn out Hispanic Democrats who would vote for Bush, even though that meant they were likely to switch back to the D column to vote for Sharp. The Perry team decided that they had to fight back, Rove or no Rove, and they went rogue, going after Sharp hard. It worked.

...If that animosity weren’t enough, after Bush was named the winner in December 2000, Perry was insistent that the president-elect vacate the governor’s mansion so that Perry could move in, notwithstanding that Bush wanted to stay a day or two longer before leaving for Washington. I heard that firsthand from the Bushies at the time....” -- Texas Monthly

********

Basically, in the 2010 GOP primary in TX for the governor's office, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutichison was hoping to come home to Texas as Governor. Her election was being backed by the Bush family and all their power players were lined up against Gov. Rick Perry, with Karl Rove serving as Sen Hutchison's adviser against Perry. Source

Rick Perry won a 3rd term as Governor of Texas in 2010.

What about this
http://www.theismaili.org/cms/900/Mawlana-Hazar-Imam-signs-agreement-between-the-Ismaili-Imamat-and-the-State-of-Texas

Rick Perry SIGNED an STATE agreement with Muslims and dedicated a brick to build their new Mosque and publically said THIS —>“traditional Western education speaks little of the influence of Muslim scientists, scholars, throughout history, and for that matter the cultural treasures that stand today in testament to their wisdom.” The Governor recalled the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the University of Texas and the Aga Khan University last year, noting that with this new agreement, “we further advance our shared efforts to bridge the cultural divide between East and West.”

And what about the Trans-Texas Corridor?
http://www.corridorwatch.org/ttc/index.htm
We (the people of Texas) had to fight Rick Perry’s Cronies for years to defeat this mess! Let’s see, take lands forceably from Texas, sell it to Cintas, the Spanish consortium, let them charge insane toll amounts, and then don’t check anything at the border coming form Mexico. Sounds like a Rick Perry Big Government plan.

And what about the Gardasil fiasco?
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2011/06/04/rick_perrys_gardasil_problem_110089.html
http://www.kbtx.com/home/headlines/5546651.html

What’s not to like with Gardasil? Let’s see, force middle school girls to get vaccinated for STDs, and Rick’s relatives just happen to be on Merck’s pay. (the maker of Gardasil) never mind that Gardasil might have some ill-effects.

The legislature of the state of Texas had to OVERRIDE PERRY on all these things (except the muslim pandering, they had no power to recall Perry’s pandering and agreements )

The list of Perry’s Big Government, Cronyism is endless.

But keep posting glowing reports form Salon, NYTimes, left-wing polling organizations and I will keep posting polls showing Voters from Texas (registered republicans) would rather have someone else than Perry (and THEY know Perry best)
