PELLA, IOWA -- Reporters from around the country that have descended upon tiny Pella, Iowa for the premiere of the Sarah Palin documentary The Undefeated on Tuesday night were in for a rude awakening: So scarce are the tickets that there’s no room in the theater for journalists.
The town, in fact, has been filling up rapidly since Palin confirmed she’d attend the premiere with her husband, Todd. Police notified residents that the streets around the venue, the 111-year-old Pella Opera House, would be shut down beginning 13 hours prior to show time.
On Monday, organizers were still divvying up tickets to the massively oversubscribed event, and reporters – some who travelled more than 1,000 miles -- were given the word that they didn’t make the cut.
Organizers were scrambling Monday, though, trying to arrange a separate screening for journalists, but there were no guarantees given.
The Undefeated, from writer-director Steve Bannon, is one of two documentaries about the controversial former vice presidential candidate. The other – a less flattering look at Palin -- is an untitled film from Nick Broomfield that is seeking a distributor.
Bannon has opted for a low-key premiere – “the hard, worn bricks of the Pella Opera House is all the red carpet I need,” he said Monday – though road closures and media trucks have dictated otherwise. Bannon, a U.S. Navy veteran, also enlisted some retired Navy SEALs for security detail.
Most of the 340 tickets went to Iowans and some of the commentators featured in the film, like Tammy Bruce and Sonnie Johnson. The most controversial cast member – not including Palin herself – is Andrew Breitbart, who is expected to be a last-minute arrival on Tuesday.
“I didn’t invite all my right-wing Hollywood friends,” Bannon said. “Jon Voight, Dennis Miller, I’ll have a screening for those guys later. I’d actually like them to buy a ticket, but they’re so tight… And you can quote me on that,” he joked.”
Pella is a religiously and politically conservative town of 10,000 people that boasts three dozen churches. With those sensibilities in mind, and because the Palins will be in the audience, Bannon and company will screen the version of the film with the less offensive opening.
The Undefeated begins with celebrities – David Letterman, Matt Damon, Howard Stern, Madonna, Louis C.K. and others – thoroughly trashing Palin, though Tuesday’s audience will be treated to bleeps instead of the more hardcore profanity used by some of the entertainers. Either way, it’s an intense opening made all the more menacing by the choice of music and the inclusion of a Bible verse.
The premiere includes a barbecue for 1,000 guests – no media – where Palin intends on mingling, though it wasn’t determined yet whether she’d make any public remarks.

I lived in Iowa from 1974 to 2002, so I know a bit about the place. Helped several presidential campaigns and have been to Pella probably a dozen times, at least. FRiend, you have NO idea what you’re talking about. #1, I’m sure the producers are paying the city for the extra police, etc. #2, the police are not there primarily for Gov. Palin, they’re there for the hundreds of presstitutes and the SEIU types that will show up to cause trouble. How do I know that? I’ve been a bodyguard for celebrities, VIPs, politicians and businessmen and others.

If you read the story properly, you would have scene that the organizers, the producers and director, are in charge of the tickets. The only thing Palin has decided is to attend.
She is not in charge of the guest list and if the media want to see the production, I am sure they can pay for a showing after the opening at the multiplex.

You do realize that the filmmaker has absolutely nothing to do with Governor Sarah Palin, other than making a documentary about her? This is Mr. Bannon and his film company putting on this premier. How is this different than paying police in Hollywood or New York City to provide security at an opening? Because Pella is small and they are big? Maybe that’s the point. Maybe Mr. Bannon wants to highlight middle America. He hasn’t phoned or e-mailed me to explain his business plan, so I’m just spitballing here. And do you think the taxpayers in fiscally conservative Pella, Iowa (home of Pella Windows, Vermeer and Ditch Witch) would allow their city to pay the freight for a private event? Then you don’t know anything about rural Iowa.
Post 10 says that the town may or may not pay for the debacle. The second round of questioning about whether he/she is sure the town doesn’t have to pay got no response. And the post didn’t address the question at hand. But thanks for playing.
Posts 16 and 28 provide a wonderful opportunity to consolidate an argument in one response. Gov. Palin is a pawn in the hands of her organizers/filmmakers/producers/directors/grips/etc. She had and has no say in this little tiny non-event. Heck, she just does what her handlers say to do.

Tiny towns are America too. BTW, she wasn't the one who selected the place for the premiere of the movie. The producer/director made the selection. Sarah simply decided to come to the premiere of a movie about herself. What is your problem? OTOH, whatever she decides to do to tweak the media, they deserve every shot of it. Because by causing great alarm in a small town it certainly appears to be a (rather silly) media stunt. Yes, we all loved her running her bus and convoy all over the countryside and watching the MSM huff and puff like an episode of “The Amazing Race.” After a few days it wasn’t funny, it was just lame.

Look upthread and you shall see I said the same. But repeating the same tired play is just childish. My take is that by overtaxing a small town for this it is just another bus run and the sign of someone who cares more about tweaking the MSM’s nose than her message of Conservative values.
It is disheartening to say the least. I hoped for better from Gov. Palin.
And you may note that my reasoned disaffection has been and will be met with ad hominem attacks. Which says even less about Gov. Palin, since so many of her supporters are members of the cult of personality (which I am sure she eschews).

As the subject of this film, she was asked to come to the opening.
Since she has less than nothing to do with where the opening of this film is being shown, nor the venue it is being shown in, how is she "tweeking the media"? How is she "overtaxing the town"? How, exactly, and in explicit detail, is she responsible for anything and everything you have posted on this thread about her?
I don't expect a reply from you, but then, I doubt that you are capable of answering the questions I put to you anyway.
She was invited to a premier of a movie about her. She didn't chose the venue, the time or anything else. She was invited and decided to attend. If the premiers was held at a 2,500 seat arena, it would not be up to her as to who gets tickets.
Had she not attended, the press wouldn't have bean as interested, so what. That just goes to show how news worthy they believe her to be.
Is she supposed to stay away from small towns because it could create a traffic jam? What exactly are you saying? She lives in a small town. Heck, Ankorage, Alaska's largest city, is not exactly a huge metropolis.
As far as handlers are concerned, I doubt she has many people telling her what to do. From all reports, it seems she keeps her own council along with her spouse.
No, no LOL. Just a few analytical problems. I think of myself as a reasonably intelligent fellow, able to apply logic with enough rigor to get a proper and objective view of things, even when I have a vested interest. But I cannot wrap my brain around how you are able to so perfectly invert the obvious when it comes to Palin. If there is revenge on her radar, which proposed outrage would provide the more compelling narrative? A litany of expletives and insults? Or the attempted and nearly successful destruction of one’s family and career?
Personally, I think the villain that is giving her the focus of a modern Sun Tzu is the man in the White House, because it was his political mafia that dragged her to hell and back in Alaska, and it is he who is now dragging her country into the abyss from the comfort of his newly redecorated oval office. The media is a bit player in this drama. She’s too smart to waste her efforts on secondary targets, except as a means to an end, a path to defeating her real enemy. She is toying with them but she will not toy with him.
But even more perplexing is this. There are, at a minimum, two theories of what is motivating her. The first theory, generally adopted by her supporters, is that her current motivation conforms to the pattern of her previous life, in which she has been an honorable person who routinely acted altruistically and unselfishly on behalf of her constituents, as a good person gifted with great emotional intelligence as well as great political intelligence.
The second theory of motivation is inherently cynical, therefore more suitable to her detractors, that contrary to the pattern of her previous life, she has devolved into just another pretty narcissist looking for the spotlight and not capable of thinking past such short term goals as tweaking the media and maximizing her financial status, even if it means leading literally millions of supporters into a false hope that she has the capacity for loftier aims.
The problem then is to discern with of these two theories is true. Is it the good Sarah, or the venal Sarah, that now stands at center stage in Pella, Iowa? I won’t recite all the recently acquired data, as I’m sure you know it by now as well as I do, but because you do know, you should have no problem realizing that the evidence in hand this far describes a virtuous, hard working altruist, not a cynical diva. Keep in mind this evidence has been evaluated by hostile reviewers and she still passes muster as a virtuous, hard working altruist.
Furthermore, my own evaluation suggests the presence of a mind endowed with subtle grace and a gift for elevated thinking and expression. Add to that the “physics” of the continuity of human personality, the principle that people above a certain age tend to continue being who they were in the past, and you make it nearly impossible for a rational mind to reconcile the known data about Sarah with your cynical theory of motivation.
Therefore, in the presence of hard data that is so strongly inconsistent with such a vapid and demeaning theory, I confidently reject it. As a virtuous, hard working altruist, she is dealing as fairly as she can with the expectations of those who hope to see her run. I further believe that if she doesn’t run, it will be for reasons beyond her control, and she will be as pained for us as we will be for her. We are real to her, and she has no intention of letting us down.

Of this entire thread (now getting longish so I think I may be feeding a bit into your agenda), only Judith Anne has actually addressed my argument: that Gov. Palin has chosen a venue that may not (my take) or may (hers) be appropriate to open her movie.
I thank Ms. (I assume) JA again for giving me the intellectual honesty to attack my arguments and look forward to working with her on moving Conservatives forward.

She will be given 30 seconds to answer, and then not knowing WTF the moderator is talking about, the MSM will lampoon her for the next 3 months on what an idiot she is, and how she is not ready for prime time.
