President Obama’s nominee to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is scheduled to meet with senior Justice Department officials Tuesday amid growing pressure on the agency’s leadership over a controversial gun-trafficking operation.
Andrew Traver, who runs the ATF’s Chicago office, is arriving in Washington as political fallout is continuing from the agency’s “Fast and Furious” operation, which targeted Mexican gun traffickers but has been linked to the killing of a U.S. law enforcement officer. Republicans in Congress have criticized the ATF’s handling of the investigation.
One U.S. official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations, said Traver may be offered the ATF’s top job on an acting basis at a meeting Tuesday with Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. CNN reported Monday that the current acting director, Kenneth E. Melson, is expected to resign under pressure.
But law enforcement and other sources said Melson has told associates that he believes he has done nothing wrong. Officials said the White House is watching the situation warily and is concerned about the ATF but has not asked for Melson’s resignation. (Emphasis supplied, MBV)
OK, folks, the remarkable thing about this story is that it is in Pravda on the Potomac. This represents a huge "Oh, shit!" moment for the White House. Melson has been selected as the goat. More likely he goes quietly into the night with a Presidential Pardon and an off shore account for his retirement.
Melson must feel he has enough evidence of illegal actions by higher-up’s that he can protect himself, so he’s hanging on, at least until they cough up a very nice golden parachute and a new career at a substantial increase in pay.
Time for subpoenas.
Or trying to steal more chains than he can swim with.

(CNSNews.com) - The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), under fire for allowing U.S.-purchased guns to flow to Mexican criminals, celebrated its first gay pride event on Wednesday.
The celebration at ATF’s Washington headquarters was intended to recognize the “accomplishments and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans to ATF and the nation, and to promote awareness of the LGBT culture,” ATF said in a news release.
“ATF works to ensure sexual orientation discrimination and prejudice are not tolerated in our workplace,” said Acting Director Kenneth Melson. “ATF is an equal employment opportunity environment where effective and equitable participation is encouraged.”
The keynote speaker, Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), spoke about his experiences serving as an openly gay congressman.
ATF says it has created an LGBT affinity group called “ATF Pride” with the primary goal of ensuring equal employment opportunity and enhancing development opportunities for LGBT employees at the agency.
