I've been helping a non-profit, the International Fire Relief Mission. We collect equipment in the US from fire departments and businesses and ship it overseas to fire departments that either don't have anything or are so poorly equipped, it's a wonder they can do anything. As an example until we shipped equipment to New Guinea, the firefighters responded barefoot wearing overalls. There's another non-profit that raises money for other non-profits and holds a yearly awards ceremony in which as much as $15,000 is awarded. We operate on about $10,000 a year. For that we've been able to ship container loads of equipment overseas at least two times a year. Each container load is worth from 4 to 8 million dollars.
Through our humanitarian missions we've re-equiped fire departments in Georgia after the confrontation with the Russians and supplied equipment to Chile after the earthquke. We're firefighters helping firefighters. We've all read about abuses of foreign aid. Our efforts provide equipment not money directly to overseas fire departments.

I think you found the first mission. The now president of the IFRM and another individual were on a church mission to Melitopol when they spotted an old truck they thought someone was restoring. They went down the street to look at the truck and found out the truck was the fire department’s engine. Three months later they had a container load of equipment collected and the IFRM was incorporated.
There are pictures of that mission and the truck on the website.
Thank you very much for posting the clickable links!
Glad to help — I found them to be quite interesting :)
