In a highly charged political environment, every news story is scrutinized for inaccuracies and signs of bias. Even an innocent mistake can appear to take on sinister dimensions.
Thats what happened to POLITICO last night, when the news organization published an opinion column about Sarah Palin that included the textual equivalent of a cartoon thought-bubble.
The authors of the piece, Paul Goldman and Mark J. Rozell, had crafted a paragraph to try to get at what Palin might be thinking. In their original version, they used quotation marks around what they imagined to be Palins thought a common convention in column writing.
Palins bus tour had some of the hallmarks of a primal scream: I built this constituency, not Bachmann, not anyone else. Looking at it through her eyes, she has a point.
The problem came during the editing process, when she said was mistakenly added to the story -- making it seem, incorrectly, that the authors were suggesting that Palin had uttered these words.
Shortly after the piece went up at 9:48 p.m., Palins political action committee, SarahPAC, posted a statement on its website slamming POLITICO for fabricating quotes.
Setting the Record Straight: About False Quotes Attributed to Governor Palin
An absurd opinion piece in Politico includes a quote attributed to Governor Palin that is a total fabrication and yet is deliberately written to appear as if it is a legitimate direct quote. By any standard this is unacceptable even for an opinion piece. This puts us in mind of a real quote of something Governor Palin actually did once say to the media: Quit making stuff up.
Palin tweeted it on her personal Twitter account....

Politico, Quit making stuff up.
GTH politico. Enough.
Politico is a rancid collection of Democrats. They never make these “mistakes” about Democrats, only Republicans. They have zero credibility, and nothing they publish should be believed.
I would have been fired immediately from a daily for such an ‘error in the editing process’ had I so thoroughly botched the job.
And that was from a daily paper...so what’s a ‘major’ publication like Politico going to do about it?
Except that AFTER the “imaginary quotes” was “she said.” “She said” is not a cartoon bubble. It was a deliberate falsification. This is BS. Politico has no cred at all.
Anthony Weiner even thinks the people at Politico are bad liars
LOL.
Looks just like a libtard from the 60’s.
What makes them think they can get away with this make up stuff anymore?????
Since When did QUOTATION marks ever mean THOUGHTS?
Apparently Politico doesn’t know the meaning of “IS”.
If memory serves, it was the sleazebags at Pollutico that first circulated the fraudulent piece declaring that Obummer is unbeatable and that the 2012 election may as well be conceded to him right now......and then attributed the article to Dr. Walter E. Williams. They got their worthless butts handed to them on THAT deal, too!
I heard enough FReepers throwing Bachman under the bus over this. They had better get their facts straight before falling for the divisive media campaign. This was just a preview of what’s to come.
Paul Goldman and Mark J. Rozell work for Politico, a site with hallmarks of a primal scream: “Don’t worry about that broad from Alaska. We’ll take care of her! We Love Barack Obama. We will do anything for him,” They said.
In my original post, an innocent mistake appeared to take on sinister dimensions. I used quotation marks around what I imagined to be Paul Goldman and Mark J. Rozell’s thoughts.
The problem came during the preview process, when They said was mistakenly added to the post.
Damn, girlfriend! Thin that hair out! I just had a flashback to 1973! (inre: Picture)
Interesting, because I read that and thought, wow, I can’t believe she said that.
