Legend has it that a Modesto, California couple purchased the car in 1950, only for the wife to be widowed shortly thereafter when her husband died trying to save a drowning woman. The distraught lady placed the sleek Chevy in storage for 12 years, but later traded it for a new 1962 Rambler ($1650) from a nearby dealer: he recently sold the same car for $60,000.
And surely worth it, the car dealer decided from the start to preserve it, so he barely took it out of the garage for 45 years... thus the all-original mint condition and an odometer reading a mere 437 original miles (!)
What a beautiful example... my dad's first car was a '51 Chevy, actually:

Chevvy introduced the 235 ci engine in 1950, and I don’t remember specifically working on any of the 235’s except my own. I had worked as a mechanic to supplement the GI bill through college, and graduated in June 1950.

Lovely- my dad had a 55 in this combo, bought it new but Stovebolt Six
For some odd reason, ‘56 is my absolute personal fave of the Tri-Five Chevys, I think I just like the two tone line and grille the best, but most prefer 55 or 57 obviously
And imho 58s are cool in kind of a massive way, first year for quad headlights and such

My older half sister inherited a "barn find" 1957 Chevy Bel Air 2 door hardtop from her father, the only serious body rot is in the floorboards, it has the original 283 and the three on a tree. I was just looking it all over on her sons photobucket page, he has no interest in it and just wants a high performance rice burner. Myself I used to own a '56 and I worked at a custom street rod shop building and restoring classic cars. Problem is the car is in Santa Rosa, Ca and I am in Alaska, I told her I will stay a couple of weeks come next january and at least do all the body repair as needed and to paint it, I have the latest in spray gun equipment.
