Susan Daniels says it may have been sought by an 87-year-old who needed medical care, i.e., Medicare. But a) why would someone that old/destitute not have applied for SS benefits AND Medicare many years earlier? and b) if that individual HAD applied for benefits, then Social Security Death Index would have recorded when that individual died (surely no one is claiming this 120-year-old individual is still alive).
Then I’m trying to square this with Daniels saying the card wasn’t actually used until 1985. Why would Barack Obama apply for a card at age 15, but not use it for identity until age 27?
Finally, I don’t understand Madelyn Dunham’s role. Leave aside that it’s shocking for someone in such a high position to literally risk her job snooping around in records she knows she shouldn’t, all with the aim of securing an illegal SSN for her grandson. Did Bill Ayers’ quite respectable parents assist HIM in securing fabricated SSNs on behalf of babies who had died? No, it sounds like he did all this dirty work all by himself. Did Madelyn Dunham allegedly do this when Barry was 15? But if he got a card at 15 to use, say for a job, then why doesn’t Daniels’ investigation show any addresses associated with that card between 1977-1985? This goes back to what motivation there would be for securing a card in 1977 that never was going to be used until 1985. It defies logic.
But perhaps I misunderstand the facts in this case.

No next of kin to report it. M. Dunham was looking for just such a number. It would work for Barry who had a ginned up COLB that was established on her word with the state to gain Barry citizenship at (well, just after) birth. She had means and motive to do both.

Let me explain. Madelyn would have sought out a SSN for Obama that belonged to a very old gentleman who conveniently had obtained his SSN late in his lifetime. The old folks who transitioned into SS, like my parents who were farmers, had no need for SS until they were eligible to draw SS or needed Medicare/Medicaid) So it is not that unusual that the old gentlemen did not need it until he needed Medicare/Medicaid assistance. Madelyn knew the aged gentleman would likely soon die and this would make his SSN the perfect candidate for a con artist trying to establish a fake identity for her young son. She knew the 1977 date of application for the SSN would fit nicely with Obama’s age of about 15 years and the gentleman’s death would then mean that there would be no overlap in use between Obama and the gentleman. That is why Obama held of on using the SSN until the gentleman died and some time had past after his death.
There was no such thing as Medicare until 1965. It the person in question was born in 1890, he would have been 75 at the time. I have no idea whether everyone over 65 was automatically enrolled into Medicare. As far as SS is concerned, not everyone is covered, e.g., state and federal employees at the time.
if a minor were to say, apply for Aid to Families with Dependent Children, the minor would need a social security number for that purpose.

Not necessarily. My grandmother died over 10 years ago. It was reported to SS. Her checks stopped. However, her name was never entered into the SS death index. My grandfahter died 5 years before and his name was entered.
No, you are right, it doesn’t make sense. But the point is not how to make sense of what happened, the point is that Obama doesn’t have a normal valid SS#. Why? HE NEEDS TO ANSWER. WHy was he using this one that doesn’t belong to him?
SS admin says (on their website) that just over half of SS numbers have been used, and none have been re-used.
