Governor Daniels will sign a bill by the end of the week clamping down on illegal immigration in Indiana.
Immigrant advocates, including some self-proclaimed undocumented aliens, protested at the statehouse, with six protesters arrested after staging a sit-in outside Daniels' office. Daniels says he respects the demonstrators' viewpoint, but says the bill is responsible legislation.
The proposal threatens the state tax credits of employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens, revokes state contracts with those companies, and denies unemployment benefits to illegal immigrants. It also ramps up penalties for crimes associated with illegal immigration, including fake ID's and the smuggling or harboring of illegals.
"It simply says we want to uphold the law. It commands the support of a huge majority of Hoosiers, and a huge bipartisan majority in the legislature," Daniels says.
The bill passed the House 68-30, with nine Democrats joining all but one Republican in voting yes. It passed the Senate 35-15, with one Democrat joining all but three Republicans.
The original bill's most controversial provisions, including orders to police to check the immigration status of people they stop, were deleted in the House.
A second bill, denying in-state tuition to illegal immigrants, must be signed or vetoed by Wednesday.

Daniels has always been pro life. If he has the legilature to work with, he can get a job done.

Completely misrepresenting what Daniels has done and said.

Dick Lugar is much older than Daniels. Lugar is not a protege of Mitch Daniels.
Daniels will leave it up to the people of Indiana as to who takes Lugars seat.
Lugar is going to lose.

All those liberal states up north like VT which want illegals, homosexuals, cross dressers etc can all take them .
All illegals down here, midwest etc can ship their illegals,homosexuals etc up there and we’ll see how those liberals want them when they live on their doorsteps.

Daniels can only sign the bills that are passed on to him by the legislature.

Now the liberals can plan a boycott of Indiana, similar to what they have done with Arizona.
Are there still protests planned at the All-Star game in Arizona in July; anybody know?
The next Super Bowl in going to be in Indiana. I wonder if the liberals will want to protest and boycott that event.
