Governor Daniels will sign a bill by the end of the week clamping down on illegal immigration in Indiana.
Immigrant advocates, including some self-proclaimed undocumented aliens, protested at the statehouse, with six protesters arrested after staging a sit-in outside Daniels' office. Daniels says he respects the demonstrators' viewpoint, but says the bill is responsible legislation.
The proposal threatens the state tax credits of employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens, revokes state contracts with those companies, and denies unemployment benefits to illegal immigrants. It also ramps up penalties for crimes associated with illegal immigration, including fake ID's and the smuggling or harboring of illegals.
"It simply says we want to uphold the law. It commands the support of a huge majority of Hoosiers, and a huge bipartisan majority in the legislature," Daniels says.
The bill passed the House 68-30, with nine Democrats joining all but one Republican in voting yes. It passed the Senate 35-15, with one Democrat joining all but three Republicans.
The original bill's most controversial provisions, including orders to police to check the immigration status of people they stop, were deleted in the House.
A second bill, denying in-state tuition to illegal immigrants, must be signed or vetoed by Wednesday.
Bump!
How come I have a feeling that this is one of those rope a dope moves for show and tell only???? No no one would pull that crap??????? Bet on it!!!!!
GOD BLESS AMERICA, Thankfully I will not be in Illinois for the Illegal alien SURGE from INDIANA!!
Don’t worry we are going to check at the border for fireworks and illegals. You better not have any fireworks.
Bravo. Maybe if enough states pass these laws it will gain some traction.
ER--exactly which of the protestors' viewpoints does this guy respect?
First he denies funding to Planned Parenthood now this!
Daniels is such a liberal!
Sounds like the guy will run for the White House.
Wonder who he will support between his old protege Dick Lugar and the the tea party guy?
One of the first things Daniels did was push through one of the toughest voter ID bills in the nation. Went through the courts already and is pretty thorough. I tried voting absentee with an expired license and my own mother pulled me out of the stack and invalidated it.(primary vote, but still ticked me off because it wasn't out of date very long)
Any state that is looking to pass voter ID laws just needs to duplicate ours, its been through the wringer already and passed the "pisses off the liberals but is completely legal" test.
Does it matter? Do you want somebody who talks the talk or walks the walk?
What’s the tea party guys name?
Texas has an illegal immigration before the legislature.
Come on TEXAS!
I’ll take the guy who walks the walk—and at this point, I don’t think that’s Daniels.
Well all I know is that Mitch Daniels just signed one more immigration bill than Sarah Palin, Herman Cain and Donald Trump have signed combined.
Wonder who the no vote R was?
They’ll be slamming him for being a racist next week since he’s becoming a mild threat to Zero.
A miserable RINO would have vetoed the bill, and basked in adulation from the MSM. There may be some hope for Daniels.
