That is one way, though surely not the only way, to read this story. The gist: the administration is now admitting that it had no video feed during the most crucial 20-25 minutes of the bin Laden raid. But take note of a detail thats hanging in the new new new version of events.
A photograph released by the White House appeared to show the President and his aides in the situation room watching the action as it unfolded. In fact they had little knowledge of what was happening in the compound.
Mr Panetta also told the network that the US Navy Seals made the final decision to kill bin Laden rather than the president.
In an interview with PBS, Mr Panetta said: Once those teams went into the compound I can tell you that there was a time period of almost 20 or 25 minutes where we really didnt know just exactly what was going on. And there were some very tense moments as we were waiting for information.
We had some observation of the approach there, but we did not have direct flow of information as to the actual conduct of the operation itself as they were going through the compound.
Mr Panetta also told the network that the US Navy Seals made the final decision to kill bin Laden rather than the president. (emphasis mine)
Its that last line that puts some distance now between the White House and the raid. The WH wasnt actually watching, and the SEALs made the call to kill. Put that together with the information that came out yesterday about the disposition of the enemy within the compound.
Several other details from the raid support the narrative that bin Laden felt a certain sense of security in his walled compound in northern Pakistanthere were no guards on site, and he was unarmed when the CIA-led Navy SEALs team dropped in Sunday to capture or kill him.
The circumstances surrounding his final minutes are still a bit blurry. A senior U.S. official said that while he was unarmed, he appeared to be reaching for a weapon before being fatally shot.
Other accounts said one of the guards was armed, but the others and bin Laden were not. Of course, well never see the actual order that sent the SEAL team in, so well never know if it truly was a kill order. Most Americans wouldnt care either way bin Laden was one of that rare breed of thug who just needs killlin. But this administration isnt composed of most Americans, its composed of people who hold a skeptical view of American power, to say the least. And its not as if Obama hasnt made a habit of throwing anyone and everyone under the bus as soon as they become inconvenient to him. And lets face it: Obamas voting base hates the military and has spent the entire war decrying every tactic the military and our intel agencies have used over the course of the war.
The Obama administration would be making a colossal mistake if it goes anywhere near turning on the SEALs who got bin Laden. But they have been making mistake after mistake since the successful raid. So Im no longer confident they can manage to dodge making this one. And if your agenda of frittering away American power and influence remains in place, its not a mistake at all.
Plus: The New York Times Magazine suffers from a case of bad timing
and worse judgment.

It hadnt occurred to me to read that as a Freudian slip but, now that you mention it
.
Never let a crisis go to waste has turned into: never let a success go to waste.
It’s not just being wasted; it’s being urinated on.
“the US Navy Seals made the final decision to kill bin Laden rather than the president.”
Obviously the writer didn’t spend years studying grammar in parochial schools. Conjures up the image of the Seals sitting around trying to decide whether to go to Pakistan or Washington DC. Let’s see, which of these guys should be kill?
Jobless claims soared to 474,000 last month, the highest claims number since August 2010. The consensus expected 410,000.
I’m sure this bonehead administration will find some way to keep the eye off of these types of numbers....never let a good crisis go to waste...
I believe they are fearing their buddies in the international community....this was probably a kill mission - no matter whether the targets were arm or not, it’s the right move, but politically for Obama it’s not because of his looney left and he would throw the Seal Team under to save himself
The writer should be thrown under a bus.
I think that in this case the seals may have screwed up..LOL
Everyone should save this collage you’ve posted!
Bfl.
It makes me wonder how the announcement of the upcoming removal of the commanding general in Afghanistan, the Secretary of Defense and Director of the CIA figures into further muddying the waters.
Removal?
Anything 0 does is suspicious to me, he’s been lying his entire life - so why stop now?
He’s been pimping and pandering ever since the CIA and the SEALS got to and killed OBL.
Now, today he’s going to Ft Campbell to ‘thank’ the SEALS - might as well put a target on their backs. All in the name of pumping up his sagging poll numbers!!
Our local news reported the night after the name of the SEAL commander with a picture!! Last name starts with ‘M’ - I couldn’t believe it.
Bump for later
I noticed that but I thought Obama had put the command in writing...
This is what’s known in the duplicitous circles of government as “plausible deniability”. You can also think of it as moral teflon.
Remember, conveniently, there was no video that they were watching in the Situation Room; there may or may not be witnesses. If there are, call them to the witness stand.
he was unarmed when the CIA-led Navy SEALs team dropped in Sunday to capture or kill him.
But the news media displayed a photo shopped reinactment of OBL with an AK-47 just behind him.
This thing has changed so many time, I disbelieve the entire operation.
My money is on the Tora Bora daisey cutter theory. OBL has been dead for years. Obama had to get the media and the birthers off his birth certificate issue. He knows it was a photo shopped fraud.
Why send KILLERS if you don’t intend to kill? That what these HERO’s do, break things and kill bad people.
