Enough! Enough Already!

Yesterday, Reuters reported that in Action Comics #900, Superman is mulling over renouncing his American citizenship and becoming a citizen of the world. Last year, Archie Comics announced that there would be an openly gay character hanging out in Riverdale. Last season, the NFL had players wearing pink gloves and cleats to bring awareness to breast cancer.

I hate to sound all unpoliticalcorrectthink, but I am sick and damn tired of being preached to when all I want to do is enjoy myself.

I know, I know, I'm selfish, I'm heartless, blah, blah, blah, yadda, yadda, yadda. Yes, I know there are problems in this world. Got it. But does the world's problems have to be advertised in every medium ? Why can't I read a comic book without being preached to about social justice or the flaws of American foreign policy ? Why can't my kid read an Archie comic book without being preached to about equality for homosexuals ? Why can't I watch the Miami Dolphins embarrass themselves without being reminded of the horrors of breast cancer ?

Here's a news flash for DC Comics, Archie Comics, and the NFL: (And this goes double for the bourgeois socialists in Hollywood) We The People want to be entertained. We don't want or need to be preached to every waking moment. If the entertainment industry would stop being so self-righteous for a second, it would realize that We The People are not idiots. We know the world sucks and sometimes we need an escape from it.

God help us all.

I could swear I remember reading these back in the day. I don't have them, but I'm certain I read them.

"Nowadays the theater has left its innocence behind, taken upon itself the task of instructing and saving humanity. ... That sense of enjoyment, the fun it all used to be, has disappeared. Some of todays dramatists seem to think that a play need be nothing more than a placard advertising the inequality of the homosexual in society or the difficulty of practicing incest in public. They no longer trouble to entertain."

- Robert Morley, 1966 (from his autobiography)

If you are equating wearing pink gloves to bad service at a restaurant, you have more serious issues to deal with.

I happened to hear about this article today. It addresses the subject of "green" companies. I post this excerpt. The rest is behind subscription:
Speaking of Walmart… Mark Steyn in "It’s Back" (National Review)

So goes Walmart’s new slogan. What they mean is the old Walmart is back — “Everyday low prices!” — and their disastrous attempt to evolve into Goremart — “Every quarter higher losses!” — is over. Five years ago, Walmart hired an Al Gore adviser as PR chief, stripped the stores of déclassé products such as fishing tackle, and filled it up with a lot of stuff that was “green-friendly.” The Sierra Club and The New Yorker said nice things about them, and Mr. and Mrs. America stayed away. As former exec Jimmy Wright told the Wall Street Journal, “The basic Walmart customer didn’t leave Walmart. What happened is that Walmart left the customer.”

Walmart went green into the red, and then realized that they couldn’t afford the Al Gore retail model. There’s a lot of that around. Before the big Gulf spill, BP had spent a decade kissing up to Democrats and eco-progressives. Once upon a time, their initials stood for “British Petroleum,” but some Madison Avenue type thought it would look better to adopt the slogan “Beyond Petroleum” and replace their old logo with a flower. Pansy? Not yet. Just a sunflower. My colleague Jonah Goldberg suggested that, after the Demo-mediacracy effortlessly turned Tony Hayward into an oleaginous Snidely Whiplash, BP ought to own their rep and call themselves “Badass Petroleum.” Exactly: “We love to drill — and it shows!”

Corporations pretending to be social workers is bad enough. But, even in the decadent phase of capitalism, the market still functions well enough to bring Walmart to its senses in a mere half decade. Alas, for Big Government, there are no such corrective mechanisms.

3...2...1... Posting from the Freeper who says if we watch any TV we’re voting for Obozo.
Can’t remember the name but they show up in all kinds of threads that have nothing to do with TV.
Kinda frosted me one day, and I responded to them with about a 4 paragraph rant asking how we were supposed to know what the other side was doing if we didn’t watch TV. Also said it was insulting to any Freeper who had enough common sense to watch TV, and would be able to tell what was liberal tripe, and what wasn’t.
I do agree that I am sick to death of the PC crap that every corporation spews out today. I’ve been a NASCAR fan since before it was on TV, and have all but quit watching since they started using an Ethanol/Gas mixture in the cars. It was bad enough when they let Toyota in. Next they’ll be racing hybrids. Puhhlleeese!
Good rant!

I’ll explain it in another way, then. I know breast cancer is a terrible disease. In fact, I knew that before the NFL decided to tell me it was a bad thing. I also know that it’s good to donate to charities that promote researching a cure. I didn’t need the NFL to tell me something I already knew and keep pounding me in the head about it.

Again, entertainment should be just that-— entertainment.

Great post. I think Mark Steyn was discussing this today while filling in for Rush.

I know how you feel about the ethanol mixture in NASCAR. When the NHL started cracking down on the violence for the lib sportswriters (Mike Lupica comes to mind along with that other tired hack, Bob Ryan.) and replaced North American hockey with the watered down European version, it lost me as a fan.

I remembered that quote (one of many great ones in Morley’s not-so-well-known book). When I read your post I realized that you were saying almost exactly the same thing, only 45 years later. It just shows that this problem goes way back.
