According to the latest poll, joke candidate and conspiracy nut Donald Trump is leading the Republican Presidential field by 9 points.

Trump is pro gun control, pro abortion, pro socialized healthcare. He praised Hillary Clinton when she was running for President and spoke well of her health care plan. He has a long history of making donations to liberal candidates including Charlie Rangel, Charlie Schumer, and as recently as 2010 to Harry Reid. He was also recently contributed 50,000$ to the Rahm Emanuel campaign for mayor of Chicago.

Trump is basically a birther Romney only more liberal and with more ego than Kanye West. I think the support he attracts is indicative of two things; there is no strong candidate for the Republicans to rally around and they will desperately cling to any fools hope, and a large portion of the GOP base has moved into the insane asylum and have deluded themselves into thinking they can keep Obama off the ballot. These people are in for a rude awakening. Obama is vulnerable, but still enjoys the support of roughly half the population, in the absence of a strong, viable, and appealing candidate Obama will get a second term. Trump is a dead end, if he wins the primary he stands no chance against Obama, if he loses, he may decide that he wants more attention and make a run as a third party candidate torpedoing the GOP nominee. The GOP will live to regret granting this man the spotlight and will pay dearly for not kicking the birthers out of the party a long time ago.

Not mine. I see no reason to believe Trump would keep that promise - the evidence seems to indicate that he'd look for something very different in an SC nominee.

For the love of Pete, why is it so difficult for people to understand why Trump is getting so much support right now? I've got your answer here, so read carefully:

It's BALLS, people. The Republicans, regardless of whether they profess to be on the right side of issues, have none of them. Your rank-and-file American wants to see our brilliant Constitution honored. They want to see laws upheld and enforced. They want to see values shared and defended. But the feckless GOPers, who are nothing more than slightly less anti-American political hacks, will do none of those things because they are cowardly, amoral, entrenched bureaucrats who couldn't run the Slurpee machine at 7-11 for a week straight without getting a good and proper ass-chewing for gross incompetence.

It really is very simple. You want the support of the American people (the real ones)? Just stand up. Pick an American principle, any principle, and STICK WITH IT. FIGHT FOR IT. SPEAK UP FOR IT. The people will love and respect you for it, and just might vote you into office despite your other flaws.

We, as a people, hunger for a statesman who actually believes in something. We hunger for a statesman whose dedication to an ideal is so strong that it outweighs his petty self-interest, that it subdues his fear, that it propels him out of bed in the morning when he is weary and wounded and would much rather give in. We are desperate to see even half the commitment to American ideals in a statesman that the average GI has shown when cold, wet and frightened in a foreign land.

Is Trump that statesman? Probably not. But when a man has crawled through the desert for days and just about given up hope for his own survival, even the most rancid, bitter, bug-infested pool of water will appear as manna from the heavens.

Whoever wants to win the next election should take note.

I’ve been pretty supportive of Trump’s efforts. One thing that would cause me to hesitate is if Trump nominated a Harriet Miers to the Court and the right went ballistic, Trump probably wouldn’t back down. Bush was famous for being stubborn and set in his ways but he would probably have nothing on Trump in that regard.

For the most part though, I find the reaction by some on FR, hyperventilating over a Trump candidacy, to be comical.

With EVERYTHING going wrong, economy sucking, joblessness, more bloodshed in Afghanistan, a third freaken war (to his party base a Dem starting a war is like a Republican performing an abortion), 4$ gas, the 2010 watershed election, Obama is still at 48% support per Rasmussen, a poll with a conservative bias. So anyone who thinks Obama is a push over and any warm body will defeat him is delusional, stop drinking the Kool Aid.

The fact that Trump can jump to the top of the list as a one-note-wonder shows our lineup of candidates they need to man-up and campaign. He’s showing Romney et al to be 90 pound weaklings.

I don’t know Trump’s mind; he may have decided to be a pro-0bama spoiler by splitting the Republican vote. Or, he may be honest (a long shot).

But he is showing up the weakness of our field. Someone needs to take a poke at him and knock him off the top of the hill.

Romney has just formed exploratory committee, designated campaign headquarters, is officially running for President.

Here is the sales pitch:

The Good:
1. He is going to be a formidable candidate due to name recognition, deep coffers, and establishment connections.
2. He is a much better candidate than Palin or Trump (not being a moron, quitter, or conspiracy nut is good).
3. May appeal to moderates and independents.

The Bad:
1. Liberal turned moderate, was pro-abortion, pro-gun control, signed gay marriage into law.
2. A chameleon politician who says what he thinks will get him elected.
3. Hated by the party faithful.
4. A billionaire, people suffering through bad economy do not want to vote for blue bloods.
5. As a Mormon will receive flack from some bigots.

The Ugly:
1. Romneycare, ouch is this going to hurt him, both in the primaries and if he survives, the general election.

Overall: Will only succeed in the primaries given a weak and divided field. If he does win nomination, stands a better chance than virtually any other currently mentioned candidate, still an underdog against Obama though. Even if he wins, likely to be a moderate President.
