>>Ok you’re right, I admit it. It makes no difference what you eat.<<

No, I never said that. Talk to any diabetic and see if there is no difference in the kinds of food you eat. Of course there is. 1500 calories of Little Debbie’s Oatmeal Creme Pies is not equal to 1500 calories of broccoli. That goes without saying.

However, I did say that this diet is a sham.

“... ok, explain this”.

I personally believe that genetics play a HUGE role in our health. I wonder if your friend had colon cancer in his genetic line? For example, my Aunt was diagnosed with colon cancer in her 60’s (several family members prior to her had the condition as well). Her son was convinced it was due to her eating habits: butter, ground meats, white bread, “heavy” meals with starches etc... so he felt “comfortable” since he ate lots of veggies, high fiber, very little carbs. He had a colonoscopy when he was 45 and it revealed lots of precancerous polyps. He was outraged since he felt “safe” because of his diet. The doctor told him that diet can help but diet cannot change genetics. Just a thought.

P.S. I am sorry for your the loss of your friend. Makes me wonder this: have you ever been to a oncology children’s hospital. Why in the world would a small child be suffering and die from leukemia, brain tumors, etc? Some of them just toddlers... how much junk could they have really eaten in two years of life? Does eating healthy help your health? Yes, I believe so. Is it a guarantee that you will live a long, fruitful life? Absolutely not. IMHO

The diet works for this woman.

I used to be dismissive of these kinds of ideas. Then I started paying attention to how I felt after eating certain foods.

It can have a profound impact on how you feel and your health. Its not just the difference between snack cakes and veggies, its far more complex.

"Really? Hmmm, Ok Explain this. I had a dear friend that worked at a major university. He ate yogurt for breakfast and a banana, lunch a small salad, dinner, chicken, light meat. Everyday he drove to work along PCH, and he passed this homeless guy that smokes constantly, eats out of garbage cans, drinks, and is stoned out of the bejeusus. My friend died of cancer (colon) in 1995. To this day I still see the same homeless guy on the same stretch of PCH, eating the same way. He is alive, my friend is dead."

This is so simple, I don't know why someone of a lesser talent hasn't solved it.

Your friend, frustrated and tired of his routine existence and diet, faked his own death, KILLED the homeless guy and took his place. Now he lives as a free spirit in laLibu, but, alas, caught in a rut.

>>The diet works for this woman.<<

The question is, does it work for her because of what she is eating or because it simply changes what she is eating. That should be the big question in any diet. Has she gone from white pasta/low fat to whole grains and monounsaturated fats?

Go to the supermarket and look at the Woman’s rags by the checkout. You’ll see a different diet a week. When you really look at them, the majority of them are calorie restriction with whole grains. Good stuff, but you’ll still see women passing each around as the “New Miracle”.

I went on a diet years ago that was V-8, tuna and olives. I lost tons of weight. Was it those foods?? No, it was lack of carbs, lots of veggies in the juice, Fish oil in the tuna and monounsaturated fat in the olives. It wasn’t the food, it was the nutrients in the food.

“The question is, does it work for her because of what she is eating or because it simply changes what she is eating. “

Only she knows.

“Go to the supermarket and look at the Woman’s rags by the checkout.”

I only do that for the pictures :). Those magazines are playing to the lowest common denominator and reflect little on healthy eating.

The idea that there are body types and that certain foods are better for certain types is not a new idea.

Most diets are quackery, to be frank.

The point driftdiver, is that NOTHING guarantees you a long and fruitful life. What you eat is important sure, but its dwarfed by other factors, many of which are utterly beyond your immediate control.

There have been innumerable diets and reccomendations on food. Heck you can get five different ones by picking up a selection of this weeks "women's magazines"! Their advice is often contradictory and backed up by too little science and too much anecdote. It's hardly surprising people are getting very cynical about them.

The best advice is to vary your diet, don't overindulge, and STOP WORRYING ABOUT IT.

What you eat is dwarfed by what factors? How ignorant. What you eat impacts your body in every way.

You’re probably one of those people who listen to the govt for nutrition advice.

I'll be happy to explain it. It's basic statistics. You take two random people from two statistical groups, and you might wind up with any random result. There is never a valid sample of one. I will guarantee that that taken as a whole, educated, fit, non-smokers who watch their diet living longer healthier lives than drug using, alcoholic, chain smoking homeless guys. This should go without say or offering any explanation at all.

Apparently you eat "rude food." Perhaps a change in diet is in order....

The point is - most diets are quackery. That’s it. The status of doctors is immaterial to that. Why do you bring it up?

“The point is - most diets are quackery”

Some are and some aren’t. What you eat is defined as your diet. If all you eat is oatmeal then it could be called quackery.

If you eat a healthy balanced diet, then its not. Eating certain foods based on body type is also not quackery.
