The Coupon Whisperer: "Extreme Couponing"---Episodes 1 & 2
The Coupon Whisperer ^ | April 6, 2011 | PJ-Comix

The first two episodes of "Extreme Couponing" aired this evening on TLC. Many similarities with the original show which aired in December although I noticed some new bits of interesting information. Specifically "money maker" deals or "making money" was alluded to. For those of you new to couponing that means when you have a coupon so good that it is worth more than the product you are buying. The amount of "overage" aka "moneymaker" aka "mm" is applied toward your other products. That is why you saw the people on today's show able to buy meat, milk, etc. and end up owing hardly anything.

One criticism I do have of the show is that for dramatic purposes the people bought HUGE amounts of items on each shopping trip. The Coupon Whisperer prefers not to do that for two reasons:

For those that have all kinds of free stuff and money makers..I did find a soldier on Anysoldier.com that is in Japan helping out should you wish to send a box

“My name is CTTSN Ramsey. We have been out to sea helping out the people of japan for weeks now. We have been out to sea for over 50 days and we are expecting to be out here for a while longer. We have a long deployment ahead of us. Everyone has been working really hard to support the relief effort. The females in my unit would like lotion, body wash, and any other femine products. The males are requesting food. We have been out to sea for a while now and the ship store is low on supplies. Anything is greatly appreciated. Thank you “

Great! I can send them some bodywash for sure. I don’t think they’ll have much use for the taco seasoning and Similac I’m overrun with at the moment though.

I’ve been thinking of starting a new couponing ping list that I would call the Coupon Battlefield. I would make a new thread every Saturday, detailing Sunday’s deals at the various drug stores. Others could chime in with grocery store deals, etc, and we could all use the threads to give us extra pairs of eyes for future deals. I was thinking that we could use each Saturday’s threads to do final prep for the next Sunday’s deals.

This would not only help us do our couponing deals, but it would bring more FReepers into the couponing world and teach them how it is done at the same time.

The Coupon Whisperer threads are awesome, but they aren’t meant to really detail deals, nor are they regular in when they appear. These would be posted every Saturday.

Is that OK with you PJ? I don’t want to be stepping on any toes here. :)

Add me please, but I think we need a longer lead time. If people have to order coupons, it takes at least 4 days to get them. I’m finding myself planning a couple weeks or more ahead now.

You’re right about that. But maybe if we do a new thread every week, we could figure a way of working beyond one week ahead?

Maybe all of you guys have some ideas on how we could best get that done.

Basically the idea is to use the Saturday thread to advertise to FReepers that what deals we’re getting and get them into the loop of finding the future deals.

Looking forward to breakfast this morning. Yesterday I scored two FREE packs of Smithfield bacon. Also a FREE large container of Florida’s Natural OJ. Last night had a couple of FREE steaks washed down with FREE wine. That was only the tip of the FREE iceberg of stuff I got yesterday and this past week. Oh, and those FREE Air Wick starter kits make great gift items.

Sounds good, but we are all so scattered. I’m in Memphis and the best place to shop is Kroger’s. They and Schucks are the only 2 that send out flyers. Schnucks is the high end grocery store, they may have some 10 for $10 deals but their over all prices are quite a bit higher. Kroger’s is the more reasonable cost wise. Both double your coupons up to 60 cents. Kroger’s does BOGO, where as Schucks rarely does.

I’ve got so much laundry/cleaning/grooming items I’ve no where else to stash them.

Food has been stocked for 6 months.

Doesn’t mean I don’t still want great deals.

Taco seasoning would be a hit with some soldiers as they look for things to make their food taste better...more like guys in Afghanistan. You can try searching under the word “seasonings”. There are cooks that look for seasonings, too.

I once sent things to make pizza to a group in the middle of nowhere that had made a BBQ pit.

I got the idea from this video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=By1jnXLR530

I had a bunch of seeds last year that I used for fillers and had no idea what to do with them. Eventually I found someone who wanted them. You just have to keep using the search function.

The way I look at this is that even though postage adds up fast.. it evens out because I make money on some products just by buying them.

I frequently get thank yous on Army letterhead, photos, stickers, certificates, -all kinds of things that is a nice reminder that they do appreciate what you send. One group sent me an Uncle Sam Bear from Iraq via priority mail.

Even when I don’t hear a word from someone I know these things make a difference. I once had someone tell me that my packages made all the difference in the world to them but they never really had to tell me that because I already know.

Nasogel is coming up at Walgreens and that is a big hit. Last time they had coupons attached to the box.

I just had a heads up on next Sunday’s Red Plum coupon inserts. Nothing special EXCEPT there is a $3 Nivea Body Wash for men coupon. The last time they had this coupon I was able to score FREE Niveas from Walgreens.

How do you get the information on who/where to send the items to?

I use Anysoldier.com

You request a name and then the information comes to you via email.

I just search around until I find someone I want to send to...

There have been times when I read the new listings every day but these days I don’t have time to do that.

It can be quite a sobering - thought provoking experience to read their posts - especially true when they list pictures.

Okay, so they’ll be getting a bunch of taco seasoning from me. That sounds like a great thing to do with it.

Yeah, I’ve been hearing about the Nasogel peelies that are around this time. I haven’t investigated it yet though.

Next week looks like a mess at Wags. A MM on Reach floss, but nothing really good to bounce off it. The Tresemme is a dog with fleas, since they’re $4.99 a piece, so you’ll have to spend close to $15 to spend $10. That’s too bad because I have a bunch of coupons for the climate control.

Today, between Wags and Rite Aid, we got $445.00 retail worth of products for ~$45 OOP. Biore and Got2b at Wags and John Frieda at Rite Aid. And of course AirWick Freshmatics at CVS...what a long day! lol

if you look for someone with a rice cooker you can send the taco seasonings, rice..and splurge to include some other stuff that will let them sort of make taco salad in a pot..

send a recipe

I haven’t done this but I have sent recipes for other things. You have to find a simple version.

You can cook cakes in a microwave..so if you find a deal on cake mixes ..and they come every now and then...you can send them that idea with the recipe on how to do it.

Those have always been a big hit.

Don’t send food with deodorant, body wash, etc.

I have been doing the biore strips with cleanser using the BOGO and the $1.00 coupon inside. So it is just the cost of tax plus filler and it is letting me roll some register rewards. That is an item even the men will love. Their faces get dirty.

I am going to buy canned vegetables as my filler to go with my Carefree and my 50 cents off coupon when the new ad turns on Saturday.

There are even people who ask for canned vegetables.

I heard that rates are going up on packages so send one out before next Monday.

Btw, when you are having a crappy day and feeling like your life sucks at the moment..spend some time reading their posts and it might make you appreciate your surroundings ;-))))

I do this when I have had a particularly exhausting, mind bending, frustrating day at Wags.

If you have young males you buy Christmas presents for, why not do some sacks up with their names on it with some grooming items for them.

Especially if they are college age and on their own, it would save them some money.

I did this with my 3 males, they got shaving cream and razors along with the T’s they love. This year I’ll expand to adding body wash, seems they like the really smelling stuff like Axe or the new Old Spice scents.

If you have girls, razors and girlie body wash would work too. It makes great shaving cream for girls.

“If people have to order coupons, it takes at least 4 days to get them.”

Maybe we could even do a little coupon trading or something.

I get anywhere from 5-8 inserts per Sunday. Being a single guy, I get lots of coupons for Ladies’ items that I’d be more than happy to part with.
