Geraldine Ferraro passes away. Palin remembers Ferraro.

Democrat and female pioneer for women in politics, Geraldine Ferraro passed away today in the age of 75 from her battle with blood cancer. She was a classy and smart woman who would discuss politics, and may differ with Republicans, but was always respectful.

As a woman, I admire Ferraro’s tenacity and paving the way for others in politics. We may disagree on politics, but she never demeaned the other side. Pure class.

More from CNN:

In 1985, Ferraro was the first female vice presidential candidate from a major U.S. political party when she ran with Democratic presidential candidate Walter Mondale.

They lost by a landslide to Republican presidential candidate Ronald Reagan and vice presidential candidate George H.W. Bush. In what became the first of Reagan’s two terms in the White House, the Reagan-Bush ticket won the popular vote 58.8% to 40% and then nearly swept the electoral votes, 525 to 13.

In 1978, she was elected as a U.S. representative for the 9th Congressional District of New York and was re-elected in 1980 and 1982.

Sarah Palin wrote on Facebook:

My family and I would like to express our sincere condolences to the family of Geraldine Ferraro. When I had the honor of working alongside Geraldine on election night last year, we both discussed the role of women in politics and our excited expectation that someday that final glass ceiling would be shattered by the election of a woman president. She was an amazing woman who dedicated her life to public service as a teacher, prosecutor, Congresswoman, and Vice Presidential candidate. She broke one huge barrier and then went on to break many more. The world will miss her. May she rest in peace and may her example of hard work and dedication to America continue to inspire all women. Flashback, via RuBegonia on Twitter, of Ferraro and Palin, the only two women VP, talking politics. A profound moment. Two female pioneers for each of their parties.

Remember when Palin became the nominee? Ferraro talked about how proud of a moment it was for women, to have a female in a ticket for the presidency. I’ll always remember that.

“Gender is irrelevant.”

You’re dead wrong.

50% of the population are women.

17% of Congress is female.

Bill Maher can call Sarah Palin a REALLY offensive name on TV and he still has a job. And you know what? It’s time we all got sick of this shit and stopped it - cold. Men and women. Even NOW joined FOX News to condemen this.

Changing the topic like this is just plain stupid.

And her praise was in appreiation for the fact that she was operating in what must have been an impossible place for a woman to face and still negotiated back then, because the mouth breathers that are with us today are bad enough.

I don’t have hate issues. I want America to grow up, beyond the PC approach to gender, race, etc. I want us to grow beyond the “victimhood” of minorities.

I’ve seen the Sarah fans say some hateful, vulgar things about male politicians, based on their maleness. Maybe those are the ones who have “hate issues.”

Lefties...

TRANSCRIPT: Sarah Palin's RNC Speech
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2074322/posts

This was the spirit that brought me to the governor’s office when I took on the old politics as usual in Juneau, when I stood up to the special interests, and the lobbyists, and the Big Oil companies, and the good-old boys...When oil and gas prices went up dramatically and filled up the state treasury, I sent a large share of that revenue back where it belonged: directly to the people of Alaska. And despite fierce opposition from oil company lobbyists, who kind of liked things the way that they were, we broke their monopoly on power and resources. As governor, I insisted on competition and basic fairness to end their control of our state and return it to the people.

...supports extra, "early funding for [public] education" (Alaska State).

>> “Thanks to those FReepers who understand that when someone dies, it’s best to respect that solemn event, and leave any judgments of the person’s character and politics to God, before whom all our puny opinions are as dust.”

> I suppose this includes Hitler, Lenin, Stalin, Mao Tse-tung, etc.

Geez...

I wrote "respect that solemn event". Death is worthy of your respect. Whether you respect the person and what they believed or did is a different question. You always have the opportunity to follow the maxim, "If you can't say something positive, don't say anything". Death is one of those times to think about that maxim.

Or do you think your judgments are more important and lasting than God's? If so, I respectfully suggest you reconsider. You, and I, and the rest of us will die some day, too.

It’s called being gracious. You might want to look it up in your newbie handbook.

Beat me.

Didn’t agree with her politics, but Ms. Ferraro broke the glass ceiling so to speak when she ran with Mondale in ‘84.\

Even though Reagan/Bush wiped the floor with Mondale/Ferraro, she still will go down in history as the first female major party VP candidate.

Politics aside, that’s a major advancement in our nation’s history.

RIP Geraldine. My prayers go out to you and your family.

"She was an amazing woman who dedicated her life to public service as a teacher,..."

Palin's parents also worked for public education. ...sorry, but I'm just that radically conservative and won't give on several issues to do with big government spending and social indoctrinations of the left (including feminism).

As a Parliament apologist, I must ask: Is she correct with this info? I remember Reagan beating a Guy named Carter for his first term.

The woman, whatever any of us think about her, is gone. To her family it is a huge loss. Let’s let God sort her good deed and her not so good deeds and leave it at that. The rest of the world is burning down around us from Wis to the mid east.. to riots in the UK and there are more important things to be concerned with than the state of Geraldine’s pros and cons.

Have now read this whole thread and have decided that my own philosophy, “to thine own self, be true,” trumps the hypocrisy of praising someone who is unworthy of praise.
I will always remember that during an interview about Elian Gonzalez. ferraro’s exact words were, “Send the kid back!”
I looked at her and thought she was a cold, hard woman. Nothing she has done since has changed my mind.
So I am sorry for those who loved her. I am sure they will miss her. But that is about as far as my hypocrisy can go.
As for Sarah, she did the right thing, even the appropriate thing for a public figure, a woman, that the left hates with such passion. She has stature and grace. I don’t.

My mama always said, if you can’t say something nice about somebody, don’t say anything. All I can say is “bless her heart.”

Respectfulness and classiness is mostly gone from our culture. R.I.P Ms. Ferraro.
