IED stands for Improvised Explosive Device. I knew them as "Roadside bombs" when I served in the IDF. Then as now, IEDs are cowardly yet effective terrorist tools. You often hear or read about IED in the news in the context of an attack against our troops in Iraq or Afghanistan. Unfortunately, these attacks are often successful and inflict damage to men and equipment. People often don't understand what an IED is and why they are so effective. IEDs are typically low tech explosive bundles. They contain an explosive charge and, at times, they are enhanced with nails or shotgun type pellets, or just pieces of steel. An IED is typically quite small (for bombs) and only weigh a few tens of kilos (a construction cement bag is 50kg which is about 110lb), which makes them easy to transport and hide. Their small size is one of their main advantages. They cause damage by sending projectiles and unbelievable velocities, which can penetrate light armor, and a shock-wave that causes internal and head injuries. I have seem the damage they cause first hand and it's very bad.

Post it at DU. They are the ones who need educating.
Everybody was a newbie at some time. I was, and so were you. Don't get pissed. Perhaps pointing him to the homepage and letting him read about the rules for posting is where he should go if he is serious.
“Everyone knows about IEDS but have you done about it lately? Ever write you elected officials and ask they they do . Thats my final point.”
I know people who are working on this. I was called in by the Army to evaluate their work. You seem to think no one is working on the problem, which is flat-out wrong.
It’s cool. You’ve been here awhile and I thought you would know. That’s all. Regards.
By the way, I hope none of the information about what is being done gets out into the public. The last thing we need is for our enemy to know the methods being studied to detect IEDs. Loose lips sink ships.
Like I said Bean counter, if he’s serious, then he can post within the rules. Okay? Solution?
Imaging and diffing entire cities with the required resolution, day or night, fair weather or foul, is not an easy task. There are other things we can (and do) do. The blogger is right - the highest return is in going after the source, the bomb planters are simple cannon fodder.
“Seems to me that with the advent of multi/hperspectral technology “
Hyperspectral cameras are very expensive and touchy to environmental issues. At 200K and up, they are division level tools. Very few are small enough to put on a UAV.
We need squad and platoon level tools for this, and the price point for that will be 10K or less. Or a solution that will fit on an average UAV.
Trust me, there are people working on this and other aspects.
One trick the bad guys use is to bury a new bomb where EOD has just removed one, so the disturbed earth is overlooked (the assumption will be that the fresh dirt was caused by the EOD team).
Okay, post 19 is funny. Humor carries the day.
“We (us) are not your personal blog-hit ranch.”
This is posted under the bloggers forum.
Why not post it here? :-)
Yes.
Please note that it isn't the blogpimp forum.
If he wrote it, he can post it. Period. Redirecting folks to a blog is pimping.
My sniper nephew reported watching mom, dad, and kids plant an IED in Iraq.
The best way to combat IED’s is to kill them all. By the millions.
If you have any ammo left, kill them again.
That is whoreible!
So you just signed up to come in here and educate us poor ignorant schmucks? You rock.
Most people don't have a clue when it comes to IEDs.
Take pity upon us, the clueless.
“Share your views and let us know what you think.”
OK, I’ll tell you what I think. You are a blog pimp of the worst kind. You don’t even post about anything someone not living under a rock wouldn’t already know. Ditch the blog; you’re not that important and you post about dumb things.
My grandson’s truck got hit with one. The noise was so loud, he lost most of his hearing, and will need hearing aids. Instead of coming home, he opted to stay in Afghanistan at a desk job, until his unit leaves this summer.
He is a blogger and it is his content. No violation. You need to spank yourself.
If so, what prevents him from posting it here?
