What is an IED (An Improvised Explosive Device)?
Associated Content. Article ^ | 3/5/2011 | Dan S. Defense

IED stands for Improvised Explosive Device. I knew them as "Roadside bombs" when I served in the IDF. Then as now, IEDs are cowardly yet effective terrorist tools. You often hear or read about IED in the news in the context of an attack against our troops in Iraq or Afghanistan. Unfortunately, these attacks are often successful and inflict damage to men and equipment. People often don't understand what an IED is and why they are so effective. IEDs are typically low tech explosive bundles. They contain an explosive charge and, at times, they are enhanced with nails or shotgun type pellets, or just pieces of steel. An IED is typically quite small (for bombs) and only weigh a few tens of kilos (a construction cement bag is 50kg which is about 110lb), which makes them easy to transport and hide. Their small size is one of their main advantages. They cause damage by sending projectiles and unbelievable velocities, which can penetrate light armor, and a shock-wave that causes internal and head injuries. I have seem the damage they cause first hand and it's very bad.

We read about this in the news all the time, and we keep losing good people in IED attacks, so it's good to really understand what this is all about.

You joined yesterday to post a questionnaire?

What do I think about IEDs? I think they're a chickenshit way to wage war.

Welcome to FreeRepublic.

If I may Dan, it's a little easier on the eyes.

Dan, I assure you that the members of Free Republic are well versed as far as IEDs are concerned.

That being said, you make many statements, but I'm not sure what your point is. Elaborate if you would.

the question isn't what is an IED it is why are they so effective? Why is the millions of dollars spend on IED defense and defeat a wasted govt boondoggle? Seems to me that with the advent of multi/hperspectral technology we could easily scan a street and see if the dirt had been displaced in the past few hours. Why are we sending men in bomb suits in to disarm these devices? Send in a robot. Who cares if there is collateral damage, blow it in place after you clear the area. I just cannot understand why we don't have so many UAV’s circling the areas we occupy that they block out the sun and use their hyper/multi spectral imaging to figure out where the bombs/IEDS are? In the end we will look back on the utter FAILURE of C-IED and JIEDDO and wonder if the lives changed and the limbs lost were all worth it. Somebody should be having a hell of a time sleeping over this bullshit.

Thanks for the warm welcome, mate :-)

It's an educational post. I have seen these in action. Most people don't have a clue when it comes to IEDs.

The ask here isn't for the nature of IEDs and the scumbags that used them. It's for personal stories of warriors who lived through such an attack. Makes sense?

Cheers,
Dan

Freedom of choice is a wonderful thing. Feel free to move on. I think it's a serious topic that can use some coverage. If you disagree, that's goodness too.

My point is that we need to find a way to fight these. Passive vehicle armor isn’t working. A more active approach of hunting the baddies as they plant the IEDs is needed. That’s the point. We sink tons of money and get very little for it. That’s an additional point. Everyone knows about IEDS but have you done about it lately? Ever write you elected officials and ask they they do . That’s my final point.

Why did you feel the need to excerpt something you claim to have written yourself?

Guidelines?

Burning the flag is legal. Does that make it right?

Easy there. All I did was put some space into his post for easier reading. That's all.

I asked you because you have been a member for quite some time, and thought you might have an answer for me. Because I don't know.

What's to sort out? This guy just signed up here, has his own blog, writes some opinion piece there, then comes to FR excerpts his own work and posts a link back to his site. It's clear he is here using Jim Robinson's bandwidth to generate hits for his pathetic little website.

The correct term for the exact procedure I just described is "Blogpimp" and it goes on here at FR several times a day, more often on weekends.
