Mike Huckabee drummed up some publicity for his presidential run Thursday by attacking Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman. The former Arkansas governor's celebrity target of choice might seem like an odd one, perhaps he was really taking a low blow at someone else.
Politicians taking on celebrities to get media attention is nothing new. Former Vice President Dan Quayle attacked musician 2Pac Shakur when he was up for re-election in 1992, blaming the singer's album "2pacalypse Now" for influencing a man to kill a Texas Ranger. Fortunately, Mike Huckabee's attack on Natalie Portman isn't quite so serious.
During a radio interview, he complained that the actress is setting a bad example by having a baby out of wedlock, calling her out for glamorizing the idea of out-of-wedlock children and pointing out that most unwed mothers aren't living such glamorous lives, stating, "Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care."
During an interview with Us Magazine, his attempt to clarify his statement was little more than a plug for his book, as he went on to say, "These people should read my book and they would know what I said instead of what some left-wing partisans are attempting to put forth." So is Mike Huckabee's attack on Natalie Portman just a way to increase book sales?
This is very possible, but it's also possible that he was slyly taking a dig at one of his potential presidential opponents. After all, Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol had a child out of wedlock as a teenager....

why dont you run?
Nah, even if this article is BS he must be flamed for the few times he is right. Why speak to what he really said? It is much more fun to distort what he said, even though he was clear.
Making something out of nothing at all.
“Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care.”
This required no distortion, and it speaks to what was really said.
Nobody with the philosophy evident in the above statement can be called Conservative.
Do you disagree?
This is typical huckster...remember his cult attacking Haley of SC?
Single moms with a brain and ambition and a good family can do very well. Most of them live off welfare and do have medicaid as healthcare. They also aren’t starving.
To say they all do great would be untrue. Many of them haven’t even finished high school. Even finishing high school anymore doesn’t prepare them for the job market.
Many single mothers are not Bristol Palin with wealthy loving parents who care for them in spite of their mistakes.
I won’t deny reality either. Question really is. How do we reduce this problem and stop abortion as the alternative?
Lol well said. I mean seriously, Natalie Portman is all this rube can find to talk about with a world over-flowing with problems that need addressed? The country is dead broke and Natalie Portman is what we’re suppose to focus on? Really? I mean....really?
Saying that unwed motherhood, single motherhood, shacking up motherhood - is a bad thing is fine.
The point you studiously avoided was the construction that without government assistance they would be starving and have no health care.
How many starved babies do you think we would have in America if there wasn’t welfare?
He is not my favorite but if he gets the nomination I would be glad to vote for him.
I think I hear Sarah Palin’s voice in the wind.
Or is it that you only object to your heroine being "disrespected"? Consistency is a sign of an honest mind.
Yeah, that’s exactly right. McDonalds Value Menu is cheaper than all healthier choices. Neuter McDonalds, problem solved.
You know what, if that’s what he was trying to say, in fact, if Mike has something to say about another candidate or their family or their associations, he needs to man up and say it instead of prissing around. The thing last time, “The Mormons, a cult? Well, golly, I don’t know enough to say...they think Jesus and Satan were brothers, don’t they?” I’m not Mormon, and I felt that was too cute by half. I can only imagine what actual LDS folks thought. If he really wanted to have that fight with one of his opponents and the church they belong to, he needed to own up to that. And if Bristol was who he was trying to get at with this...you know, don’t hint around. Just say it, own it, and take the consequences. You’re a grown man, Mike, not a Heather. Act like one.
No matter what one thinks of Huckabee (and I'm no fan of his) what he said is right on the money. Good for him for speaking out, more moral folks need to speak out against rampant immorality these days.
Yep, in a situation like Portman’s I say live and let live. When he says things like this Huckabee furthers the stereotype that we are all bible thumping idiots breaking down everyone’s bedroom door.
And do you call yourself conservative?
I begin to see what type of voter Huckabee is attractive to!
I don't use those kinds of words to describe Huckabee and I've seen enough of Huckabee's behovior to make the judgement that he doesn't deserve my defense.
Or is it that you only object to your heroine being "disrespected"? Consistency is a sign of an honest mind.
Your description that Palin is my "heroine" is hyperbole. Hyperbole is a sign of a dishonest mind.
I like the guy- but there is no way on Earth he could beat Obama
Palin will give him a slap-down at the debates that he will never forget
