Medicare does not pay for long term care in a NH. They will pay for 90 days IF you have been in the hospital for 3 days. Sounds like the ER physician does not believe she needs to be admited to a Acute Care Hospital bed. Could they do this anyway ——Yes. But Medicare may not pay the bill. Could they some how make this work where Medicare will pay. Absolutely. And I am not talking about lying.

Yeah, in California it's 3 days hospital, then if admitted to skilled nursing Medicare pays for 100 days. My mother has been denied skilled nursing on a number of occasions after hospitalization, even though she's had pneumonia, kidney failure, dehydration, and probable mini-strokes. You name it, it's never good enough for a Medicare referral.

The doctor and/or hospital always says her ailment "doesn't qualify, as it doesn't require skilled nursing." She has Alzheimer's, like she could care for herself under these situations??
