Obama’s Spending Freeze is the Same Old, Same Old…

In tonight’s State of the Union Address (join us tonight beginning at 8:45 PM EST for liveblog coverage), President Obama is expected to propose a five-year spending freeze for non-defense discretionary spending. Such a freeze, while a good baby step, will do nothing to reign in the spending spree that Congress has been on since 2008. So, we’d freeze the budget, but not roll back any of the trillions of dollars in additional spending that Obama has added to the federal budget since his inauguration in 2008. Besides, this whole proposal sounds a little too familiar. I feel like we’ve heard the same song and dance before.

A spending freeze needs to be laughed out of Congress. That’s like Hitler calling for a freeze after he’d taken France, East Europe and half of European Russia.

Let me pump up the spending levels to insane amounts, THEN freeze it. LOL

This will be easily exposed for what it is.

After running up the nation’s debt TWO TRILLION DOLLARS since his last SOTUA, freezing his rate of drunken spending wouldn’t do anything to dig us out of the Chinese debt trap into which this incompetent has led us. One can only hope that Ryan will make this point clearly and often in the after-the-circus response.

How does he invest in education, infrastructure, etc. in the face of a spending freeze?

His version of 'spending freeze' is screwing real tax-paying Americans (e.g., those that don't just pay payroll taxes [OASD and Medicare]) out of what little money they get back from what was stolen and giving it to lazy ass Americans on EITC......

I've always thought that the movies of what life is like after the Apocalypse and Armageddon were far-fetched. I'm not so smug about that now. These leeches will get beastly violent when the crunch comes and there ain't no more money.

I’m willing to bet that such a “freeze” also includes annual 5-6% increases in “baseline budgeting”.

Non-defense discretionary spending is just a small percentage of the total budget. IIRC about 50 to 60 percent of the budget is tied up in non-discretionary programs that include all of the big ticket transfers of wealth from the productive people to the nonproductive.

This old play has been tried before but gets us nowhere because the real culprits of overspending are never touched. The only programs touched are the ones that actually help the tax payers and are somewhat constitutional

Back in the mid to late 90's, when I helped form the budget for my defense agency, the Baseline was 8% and never calculated into any cuts or freezes. That means a freeze would automatically raise our annual budget by 8% but still be called a freeze.

Great accounting feature, don't ya think? /s

That’s like Hitler calling for a freeze after he’d taken France, East Europe and half of European Russia.

That is in fact what Hitler tried to do: He hoped for peace with England after his initial gains.

Most of the budget is non-discretionary spending. This does hardly anything, but the press and Obama will crow about how much it will fix things.

I am even sick of the Repubs talking about going back to 2008 levels. That’s just way too high.

Go back to pre-9-11 levels. Then I’ll say we’re on the road to making some initial progress.

Just remember that we’re hearing “spending freeze” by the same folks who view tax cuts as “spending”.
