I'm thinking about picking up one of the new breed of "tactical" .22 LR rifles. I was considering the HK416:
and the SIG 522:
A friend of mine is going to grab a Ruger SR-22 at the next show, but I already have a 10/22.
I was leaning towards the H&K, but look what just came out: the ISSC Mk22, which is a virtual clone of the FN SCAR in .22 LR.
Tacticooly, this one pegs the needle.
Opinions?
What’s the point? To have an AR clone for cheap training?
Buy an AR and get a CMMG .22 LR conversion kit!
Exactly so. Spending the day at the range with an AR-15 chambered in 6.8 SPC is a bit pricey, after all. Any of these would be good training, and fun to shoot.
Why not just pick up a .22 LR conversion kit for your present M-Forgery?
As always just my opinion and your mileage may vary.
But seriously, for $300 or so you can't go wrong tossing a 10-22 into the mix. Really.
Excuse to buy a new gun / investment.
I’d just get a conversion upper.
But for a genuine “tactical .22” I’d get a Ruger 1022 and install a fast twist barrel. (Takes 5 minutes.) Then you can shoot subsonic 60 grain ammo. That’s a tactical .22.
See 8. GMTA. Fast twist barrels even come threaded at the muzzle for flash suppressors or other accessories.
This has idea has my vote.
I wouldn't need much of an excuse to buy one.
I vote for a .22 rimfire magnum.
Probably less so than spending 2k+ on a high end AR15 in 5.56, then buying ammo for it, wouldn't you say?
You can get an entry level AR for far less, if you're just looking for some cheap trigger time. Are you sure you're not just looking for a sweet new toy, and not a training aid?
“Tactical” is one of those words that has little meaning to me. If I paint my underwear black and add a light, are my fruit of the looms considered tactical? :)
Seriously, If all you are interested in is a “fun gun”, buy what ever pleases you best. But if you are wanting something for low cost training, the trigger pull and other functions ought to be exactly the same as your duty gun.
Guilty! Granted, the training aid aspect is a side benefit.
Here's a thought and once again it's strictly my opinion.
Why don't you just pick up the conversion kit and pocket the cash difference. You can put that money into more ammo (never a bad thing IMO) and even more importantly range time.
It's always great to pick up a new bang stick and the temptation to have the new hot looking vundergun is indeed very, very strong. But to my mind it's better to increase the ammo stash AND increase your skill level.
What's retail on that bad boy? $700 or so? The conversion kit will run you about half of that. $350 buys a LOT of .22 LR ammo. Put half of the difference into ammo and the other half into time at the range.
As with all free advice this is worth exactly what you paid for it.
However if you do buy one let me know. I'll be happy to drop by and help you break it in. LOL
Grab last month’s American Rifleman, or maybe the one before. It has a very good comparison article about all of the “tactical” .22’s on the market.
I'm sure they sell those online somewhere.
if not, we’re gonna get rich :)
