Actually, that’s a statement by a stenotypist. He or she is simply reporting the fact that there was applause after the statement. It’s a concession to deaf viewers.
It can also be the speech put up there in text for deaf viewers, and the speech has built-in pauses for expected applause for Obama’s copy, and someone forgot to take it out for the Jumbotron copy.
And do we really think someone was frantically typing away the words being read off TOTUS or was soft copy made available? Color me skeptical - this crew has been tacky since day one.
Ive never seen closed captioning on a jumbotronat a live event. If it was on someone’s tv it wouldn’t eb on the jumbotron itself.
Still, my bigger issue is Obama himself courted the applause and you could tell because he raised his voice and changed his tone numerous times just as he was coming to his applause lines. Watch Bush at Va Tech or even Clinton at OKC. they spoke in the same even, somber tone throughout. No courting applause. Obama lapsed into campaig rally mode plenty of times.
Also, he easily could have taken a second after the 1st major applause and said “I know you’re all excited, but lets all show some respect, there’s no need to applaud” That would have taken care of it and there would have been no more applause.
