Peggy Noonan: Obama Rises to the Challenge - He sounded like the president (Slobber warning)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | January 15, 2011 | Peggy Noonan

Posted on 01/15/2011 11:26:00 AM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

The beginning of the president's speech wasn't good, and was marked by the sonorous banalities on which White House staffs in times of crisis always insist. "We join you in your grief," "We mourn with you for the fallen," "a quintessentially American scene . . . shattered by a gunman's bullets." Modern presidents sometimes speak as if their words were crafted by producers for a TV newsmagazine like "Dateline." This is bad because television producers tend to think their audience is composed of people who require the plonkingly obvious to be repeatedly stated in the purplest prose. The trend should be stopped. Presidents are not anchormen of true-crime shows, or were not meant to be.

I begin grouchily to underscore the sincerity of the praise that follows. About a third of the way through, the speech took on real meaning and momentum, and by the end it was very good, maybe great. The speech had a proper height. It was large-spirited and dealt with big things. It was adroit and without rancor. The president didn't mourn, he inspirited.

It began to turn when Mr. Obama started to make things concrete. Vaporous talk of victims turned into specific facts about real human beings: Phyllis Schneck was a gifted quilter, Dorwan Stoddard spent his spare time fixing up the Mountain Avenue Church of Christ. But the speech came into its own when the president spoke, again in concrete terms, of the condition of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords: "I have just come from the University Medical Center, just a mile from here." He had learned that "right after we went to visit, a few minutes after we left her room and some of her colleagues in Congress were in the room, Gabby opened her eyes for the first time."(continued@link)

Glenn Beck and Peggy have stockholm syndrome and some idiots are falling for it. All the media and ALL TV support him because he is a god.

I can't believe how many have gone squishy. Are they blind??

The worst part of the president’s speech was the SHE OPENED HER EYES lie. 1)She has one eye bandaged. 2)She had opened her eye already. 3)He could have been factually correct by saying she opened her EYE voluntarily for the first time since the shooting. It would have still been great news.

Other than that, I did not object to his speech. I objected to the atmosphere and the lack of rebuke by the president of the university or even the president. But the people who love and follow President Obama are like people begging for water in the desert. They’ve had nothing to cheer about for over a year, and their savior (blech) was present and needed to be praised.

For supposedly smart people, Peggy Noonan, etal, sure are gullible. You would think after being fooled at the election of Obama, they would learn how to listen to the Obama/leftist language. This speech had none of the stuff the smart set claims to have heard.

noonan wasn’t slobbering, she was drooling. Can’t these leftist hags let it go? They are so enamored with this mongrel (to use nobama’s own self-descriptor) loser.

I always thought Fairleigh Dickinson was in New Jersey.

It is, but the idiomatic term "best ... the northeast has to offer" usually means one of the Ivy League schools (e.g. Yale, Harvard, Brown, Princeton) or possibly one of the former seven sisters (Smith, Wellesley) or even a very selective non-Ivy if you want to stretch the definition a touch (Wesleyan).

Fairleigh Dickinson doesn't fall into any of those categories.

Sounds like she is declaring Obama da winner.

That’s what I deduced from the article.

I have been saying over and over to the anger of more than a few here that it is 24x7 propaganda and brainwashing by TV. Beck works for Fox so just another example that they are no better than the other networks. And yes their largest individual shareholder is a Saudi or really Saudi Arabia. He manages SA’s money.

These people posting this nonsense are either shills or are like beaten dogs expecting Obama to throw them a bone. He was 100% behind destroying Palin and Tea Party members.

This was so textbook. Attack and destroy then he rises above it. The fools fall for it.

As far as Beck. Maybe the fix is in for 2012. He knows that he is going to win and he wants to be with the elites. His Saudi bosses at Fox told him what side he needs to be on. The Saudis are going to spend $1 billion to reelect him and steal the election.

Beck is raking in big money now. Probably $50 million a year. It’s a business and the public are suckers.

The idiots here agreeing with Beck have no clue what is going on. Your country or what was your country is being looted and stripped. The dollar will probably fail. This is not Jimmy Carter 2.

I think you are the only person in the thread who has no clue of what is going on in America. I see the CA74 so that sort of explains a lot.

So he sounded like a President. If I recall correctly, that’s why they elected him in the first place—because he SOUNDED like a President. What he has made abundantly clear for the last two years is that he doesn’t have a clue how to ACT like a President.

He talked a lot about ending the war in Iraq too, and making everyone love us if we only voted for him, so I guess that means we're at peace.

What a tool.

give these RINO’s a little altruistic babble and they will wet up their panties every time.

Altruism is like a drug... It makes you all warm inside .... then it imprisons you .... then it kills you

Pray for Sarah and the return to individualism

If by “presidential”, she meant banal, inane and mendacious, she's right on the money. Or maybe she was just referring to the Mussolini pose he repeatedly struck every time the weak-kneed suburbanite lasses in the audience shrieked “we love you!”. That certainly looked presidential.

Amazing how the Noonans and Krauthammers of the world fall right in line every time this mediocre street-hustler recites one of Favreau’s pablums in front of a crowd.
