Protesting near funerals will be illegal in Arizona immediately after Gov. Brewer signs a bill passed by the state legislature Tuesday.
Lawmakers approved emergency legislation to head off picketing of the funeral of the nine-year-old girl gunned down in the attempt on the life of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.
"We need to protect our grieving families from having to go through the pain of being exposed to protesters," said Steve Farley, D-28, the House minority leader.
Members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., said Monday it plans to picket the funeral of Christina Taylor Green on Thursday because "God sent the shooter to deal with idolatrous America."

The bill was passed with unprecedented speed.
Dozens of lawmakers co-sponsored the bill, and it sailed through the legislature within 90 minutes. The Senate committee hearing on the law took just 3 minutes.
Sure it may stop Phelps and his gang for one day, but it’s inevitable that such hastily passed laws will raise their ugly head down the road.
Seems unconstitutional, doesn’t it? I completely agree with the sentiment behind the passage of this bill, but that doesn’t mean I support suppressing free speech.
I’m sure the cult will be in court in the morning to have the law overturned.
ACLU to file suit in 5...4...3...2...
I am sure there is no scriptural support for this chuch’s “interpretaions.” This is the kind of junk that gives people excuses to not want to be Christians. Who would want to be like that?
As stated on the other thread, as much as I loathe these people, they have every right to “peaceably” assemble and protest. I can’t imagine this law holding up in court.
What these loathsome pieces of dog squeeze are truly hoping for is for someone to open a can of whoop-ass on them so they can sue. This is their agenda, IMO.
All that said, the Lord is holding a special place for them. And boy is it hot!
maybe thats the objective, stopping them for that one day for the funerals by tying them up in court. Then they can happily try and overturn it.
Not too keen on the idea of governmentally trying to squelch this. What I AM most definately for is the kind of remedy you would have seen 100 years ago: local Tucson townsfolk converging on them, beating these Westboro scumbags to pulps, and then tarring and feathering them.
That would be the best outcome.
“I cant imagine this law holding up in court.”
Article said it was patterned after an Ohio law that was upheld by the 6th circus court.

Yea, I saw that. But, what about SCOTUS?
So if it is a misdamenor does that mean they will arrested
at the scene or just given a ticket
I suspect there will be many cops willing to take them for a ride in the back of a cop car....
It seems to me that this was passed just for these funerals so an appeal will take months and then it’s done what it was intended to do.
Think I’m going to get in touch with the Patriot Guard Riders and get some good cold-weather riding gear. I’ve had enough of the WBC assholes.
Federal Judge Rules Missouri's Funeral Protest Ban Unconstitutional
I’m sure that the court will take enough time to carefully consider the legal merits of the case.A few weeks seems reasonable.
There are no more excuses for uncivil behavior.
