Has anyone found another COLB from Hawaii in 1961 that listed race as African?
Has any 49 year old Hawiian of African ancestry come forward with a COLB? (So we can see the race listed.)
Does anyone have the ‘COLB rules’ for race in place in Hawaii in 1961?
TIA
So far we have not found any indication or proof that any race or color/ other than the allowed officially mandated ones, has been used. I’ve never heard of any COLB out of Hawaii other than obama’s, listing race as “African”.
Africa is a continent made up of many countries. It simply refers to anyone from the continent of Africa, so, not a race/color.
It would be like me listing my race as “American”.
Page 231 contains the requirements for Race and color.
Births in the United States in 1961 are classified for vital statistics into white, Negro, American Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Aleut, Eskimo, Hawaiian and Part-Hawaiian (combined), and other nonwhite.
There was NO classification for African (or African-American)

The classifications were mandated by the government. Hawaii could not just up and put anything on them. If I said I was Swedish, they would have classed me as “white”.
Just in case no one has answered yet, people have found the list of races/ethnicities in use in HI in the 60s, and “African” is not on the list, nor is “black”. “Negro” was the only one that would suit.
Hopefully others will chime in, maybe someone has the list given.
