Put me in charge of food stamps. I’d get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho’s, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks to cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job.
Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I’d do is get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Then, we’ll test all recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine and document all tattoos and piercings. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, smoke, or get tats and piercings, then get a job.
Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your “home” will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place.
In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a “government” job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you to do. We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the “common good”.

Indeed. If these welfare programs are one level of government control then this imagined solution is another. What is done to "them" today is our future.
Back when I was in the Army I decided that experience was the closest I would come to living in a communist society.
The welfare state is the pit below the slope. If people are using food stamps, they should be using them to avoid starvation, nothing else. Make them acceptable only for sustenance and come down hard on people who misuse them.
While I understand the sentiment, and, to some degree, sympathize with it, this strikes me as the right-wing version of left-wing fascistic tendencies.
I think he touches on the answer - make food and shelter available to those in desperate need, but don’t have the government try to control their behavior beyond the immediate provision of aid. Maybe like modern day poor-houses and soup kitchens.
Making basic food supplies available for short term problems is reasonable and appropriate. Don’t give them “credit cards” in the guise of food stamps. Don’t provide individual, tax-payer-paid housing, and then expect the recipient to act like an invested home owner. And, do require some proof of eligibility, in that the recipient must at least be an American citizen.
Don’t try to make the government protect their dignity and self-esteem*. That’s not the job of government. Doing the right thing and being an invested, contributing member of society is how those things are achieved. The government has been very successful at enabling and encouraging negative and harmful behaviors.
*But, of course, we should always treat our neighbors with respect, love and kindness. But, love and kindness does not mean encouraging and supporting harmful behaviors or actions.

I’ve been wondering the same thing for many, many years.
This should be only voluntary, not forced. Anyone that wants to hang from the government teat should have to obey some rules that frankly should discourage depending on the government.

Obama’s science czar is on record for favoring a two child limit for all families, even if they never take a dime of welfare. Once the policy of forced birth control/sterilization is in place and normalized, it becomes much easier to extend it beyond its original intent. Just think what could happen if we were all forced into a single payer health care system.
As a mother who loves who loves my fairly large brood, I shudder to think that in a few generations my grandchildren could be denied the blessing of a large family. We have qualified for welfare for the past 10 years and haven't taken it mostly because we want to be accountable to God and not to the government. I also think that stealing is wrong and do not want to raise my children on ill gotten gains; welfare is essentially theft.
I think that a more reasonable approach, if we must have government assistance in the first place, would be that public assistance is available for one child, after that you are completely on your own. No exceptions.
He doesn’t say FORCE women to use birth control. LBJs “welfare” system encourages MULTIGENERATIONAL dependency on the government’s dole, and encourages out of wedlock birth for MONEY. The more kids you make, the more “free” $$$$—this was never supposed to be the intention of ‘welfare’, it was supposed to help in the SHORT term, not 30-40 years later!! >:-(
Welfare reform is way overdue in America. There’s no reason why a grandmother, mother and pregnant teenage girl should all be buying junk food and cigarettes at Walmart with taxpayer funds, IMO.
Oh hell no! I've dealt with this type. They created more work than they were worth and ended up discharged.
I see you subcribe to Margaret Sanger's philosphies. She was the founder of planned parenthood and promoted "eugenics" as a means to eliminate inferior persons. They say she was greatly admired by Adolph Hitler.
A better way would be to remove government from "charity." Private organizations can do much better and are held accountable by donors.
I can’ access the rest of the letter but I would add, you can’t vote,in ANY election, until you’ve been off the public dole for one year.
The bums that hang out at our local homeless shelters don’t like the required Bible study that comes along with the meal, shower and the a place to sleep. They get upset when they aren’t allowed to drink alcohol on the premises.
Too bad, so sad. Everything has a “price”. This is why the government programs don’t work, there is no consequences for their bad behavior.
This is why there are Church groups that will supply the means necessary to survive when times are tough. When times are tough and you depend on the government you need to have an accountability of some kind.
I personally would like to see the government go back to the basic of the Constitution, which would throw out all state and federal welfare programs. The Constitution doesn’t not require the government to feed, clothe, provide housing or medical care. The only group that should be eligible for those benefits is our military.

Civilization rests on the linkage of sex, marriage, childbearing, commitment, productive work, long-term planning and stable family formation. This linkage is the foundation of society. This Norplant/tubal crap lays TNT charges at the basement level.
If it were a choice between one thing and another, it would be better to prosecute fornication than to subsidize sterile copulation.
I agree. With the government usurping the church’s role, all accountability and hope for redemptive change is gone. Bad behavior is rewarded and the children suffer even more.
I think the right approach is to reduce the teat rather than to be in charge of feeding.
