The field in the race for Chicago mayor shrank dramatically Monday, as election officials also began determining whether candidate Rahm Emanuel should be disqualified over residency issues.
CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine was at Mondays hearing when the most surprising move was made: The man who triggered the controversy over Emanuels residency, Rob Halpin, withdrew.

And Halpin was threatened with.....??????
Surprise, surprise. Chicago politics at its best. Harkening back to when Hussein cleared out his opponents back in his senatorial days.
So Ralm got volunteers to pretend to collect for Halpin and then turned in fraudulent signatures to knock him out of the running.
Too complicated. If Halpin was paying folks to get signatures (I don't know if he was), then I can see folks padding the petitions for a few extra bucks.
Or they could just be exta-enthusiastic, in a Chigago sort of way, and maybe Halpin didn't pay enough for the signature checkers to look the other way; or Rahm's team out-bid them.
This is one of those issues where I’m sort of split. On the one hand he gave up his residency when he moved to D.C. to work for the White House, and on the other why should he be forced to give up his residency because he went to work for the WH. That’s a bit of a stretch, but is no less valid.
Key to this is that he rented out his house, which indicates that he’s leaving/left the district for the long term, and has surrendered his residency claim. If he voted in D.C. at any time, then he’s definitely out. If not, then it becomes a little more murky.
Just the same it would be fun to watch him run...and lose.
FMCDH(BITS)
Even easier.
“Everybody” always collects fraudulent signatures every time. (That’s the “Chicago way” you just have to collect more fraudulent signatures from approved frauds for approved frauds to get in the chosen elections.
It’s just this time that Rahm (obviously!) CHOOSE to combat the fraud and get a (staged) hearing where they were revealed as fraudulent.
I agree with your sentiments. And if Chicago wants to run itself like a banana republic, I’ll accept it to a certain point. However, if they allow Rahm to run, it seems to me they should toss out the residency requirement for all potential candidates. Now THAT would be fun!
I think you’re probably right.
Well, Alan Keyes did sorta pave the way for that....
Hillbuzz says that Rahm can fight this because he has ‘maintained a residence (locker) at Man’s Country in Boystown’.
Thanks Robert A. Cook, PE.
LOL!!!
