7.9 on the Richter scale; village destroyed.
An Earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale rocked the Aleutian Islands off of Alaska at 11:28 on Thursday morning according to the World Geologial Association. The earthquake was centered just off of the Rat Islands, a part of the Aleutian Archipeligo chain that extends into the Pacific Ocean off of the southern part of Alaska toward Asia.
The one village on the Island of Kiska, a mining settlement called Khvostov, was decimated; 219 of the approximately 750 residents were injured, although there were no fatalities reported.
The village of Khostov was built in World War II, as the entire Rat Island chain was a military base that provided access to Asia. The village was built with earthquakes in mind, and as such the structures are all built with safety measures to protect against the frequent quakes in the Aleutian chain.
Aftershocks were felt for nearly half an hour after the earthquake, which lasted nearly 90 seconds.
Coastal areas from mainland Alaska to California and across the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii and Japan are currently on alert for wave activit from the Alaskan Earthquake.
I hear that San Francisco might get a big one in 1906. I hope it doesn’t happen.
I heard yesterday Long Island, NY, had one. I believe it was a 3.9. Not normal for that area - but what’s normal any more.

Thanks for the ping. So much to catch up on! :)
I vaguely remember something about an Alaska quake, but not enough to even give you a good direction to look in... I’ll definitely post/ping you if I remember though!
I see the problem.
None of us, not *one*, is logged in.
This is neither hugh nor series.
Please reset your beebers and return to your regular duties.
9.2
According to earthquake 3d in the last seven hours there have been three 6.1 to 6.8 quakes in the last 7 hrs, none in Alaska that high.
I meant 7 days not hours, there’s been alot of minor quakes in
Alaska over the last week.
Nope, it ain't you, the title changed.
I blame the LHC.
Well, *obviously* the government is trying to cover this up.
Obviously.
I don’t remember seeing OP on FR...
Man, is this thread screwed up. Just kill it.
Thanks for the ping!
Whew! I was afraid that what was once part of Hawaii was about to be subducted.
