GOP leaders demand Smithsonian pull offensive 'homoerotic' display

A so-called "Christmas" exhibit on display at the Smithsonian is coming under fire from Republican leaders on Tuesday.

According to an article at The Blaze, the exhibit includes "mature themes" such as:

...images of male genitals, naked brothers kissing, men in chains, a mouth being sewn shut and an Annie Lebovitz portrait of comedian Ellen Degeneres grabbing her breasts.

The exhibit, named “Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture,” also includes video images of an ant-covered Jesus on a crucifix and a painting the Smithsonian describes as "homoerotic."

David C. Ward, co-curator of the exhibit, told CNSNews.com:

“This is an exhibition that displays masterpieces of American portraiture and we wanted to illustrate how questions of biography and identity went into the making of images that are canonical.”

Republican Eric Cantor told CNS News the exhibit should be "pulled", and warned the Smithsonian would face serious questions when Congress considers the next budget.

“This is an outrageous use of tax payer money and an obvious attempt to offend Christians during the Christmas season,” said Cantor. “When a museum receives taxpayer money, the taxpayers have a right to expect that the museum will uphold common standards of decency. The museum should pull the exhibit and be prepared for serious questions come budget time.”

Merry Christmas from the smithsonian. If they want to display this stuff, they should take it to San Francisco and find a porno shop - I hear they like that stuff out there, but keep it out of the Smithsonian, for crying out loud!

Liberals love to mock Christianity. If they tried doing that to Islam, which they’ll never do, they’d lose their heads. They get away with it cuz they know there’s no Christian equivalent of Islam’s Rage Boy!

Good for Cantor. The GOP is WAY late in fighting this garbage. This filth has no place in our national museum and should not receive a dime of our hard-earned tax money. It infuriates me to think how hard I work for my money only to have it stolen by Washington and spend on this garbage.

Pull funding for the arts - Smithsonian, National Gallery, NPR and Public TV. There’s no reason they can’t obtain private funding to remain open. And they’d be more respectful of people’s sensibilities than they are now with offending us with liberal propaganda disguised as art.

“These are masterpieces.”? Where’s the “critic” from History of the World?

Looks as if the Smithsonian needs to be purged of crazies again. Last time, they blamed the US for WW II...

If the desecration was removed from the crucifix, liberals would claim the display was unconstitutional.

I’d like to hear Paul Johnson’s verdict on that. I don’t he’d call this offensive rubbish “art.”

Gay or straight, liberals seem to have their development arrested at about age 12 as sexual organs and nudity are a source of endless fascination. Their ‘art’ might just as readily be found on the wall of a public toilet.

Huh? Government is broke yet they find money to fund this?

It’s not art. Liberals think that anything that a downtrodden minority does or excretes is art.

I know there are many who get nervous when Pubs start attacking social issues, but this particular issue is a winner.

Note to the new, Republican congress: Fire everyone even loosely associated with this.

The House subcommittee responsible for the budget of the Smithsonian is the Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies.

The current ranking minority member of that subcommittee is Michael Keith “Mike” Simpson, D.M.D. (Dentist) (R-ID). This means that with the new congress, he is likely to be the chairman of that subcommittee.

He has recently come under strong criticism as the *only* Republican to have voted in favor of holding the current “lame duck” session of congress.

Progressive Rating: 6/100
Conservative Rating: 44/100
American Conservative Union Rating: 84
Americans for Democratic Action Rating: 10

In the 111th Congress Simpson became the Ranking Member on the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee. With this position he is now considered a “Cardinal” (a term applied to the chairmen or ranking members of the Appropriations Subcommittees) within the House Republican Caucus.

He also serves as the small state representative on the 33-member House Republican Steering Committee. Known as the “committee of committees”, the Steering Committee decides which Republican lawmakers become ranking members on House committees.

Joined with a small number of Republicans to vote in favor of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).

Simpson has also been a supporter of the National Endowment of the Arts and the National Endowment of the Humanities, voting each year against Republican amendments to strip them of funding.

According to Esquire Magazine: “More than any other representative, Simpson lives by the philosophy that democratic representation is a matter of finding not advantageous positions but common ground...”

Simpson has been credited as having a key role in the election of John Boehner (R-OH) to the position of House Majority Leader in the 109th United States Congress.

Simpson has become increasing opposed to President Obama and the Congressional Democrats’ policy agenda. Simpson has recently announced his commitment to repealing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, questioning its constitutionality and effectiveness.

Hmmmm. I have a different personal description for post-modern "masterpieces".

Crap. It's crap art. Ever gone to a University and seen the Senior artwork on display? The parents must weep at the thought all the money they spent being shown to have been dumped down the rathole. 4 years and they can't mix paint. Universities don't create or train artists. They destroy them.

"Beauty is truth, truth beauty"

Not so anymore. The left has redefined 'art' to be anything that offends the majority, that is, the good, the decent, in this country.
